Here's a rebuild of a part of #CharlesBabbage's #DifferenceEngineNumberTwo, by the team led by #DononSwade at London's #ScienceMuseum. It implements an adder.

Interestingly, the exhibit includes a foot-operated metal lathe from 1910, likely closely modelled on the type of lathe that Babbage commissioned 70 years earlier. It was capable of achieving tolerances of 0.1mm.

Two horizontal brass plates enclose a space slightly smaller than a domestic microwave. Five vertical axles are mounted on the plates. Two of them contain stacks of two or four cogs, each tooth numbered from 0 to 9 in a recurring pattern. Two axles contain cams, and one axle contains both cogs and cams.A desk-sized metal lathe built from cast metal. The workbench resembles a modern hobbyist wood lathe. All the spinning parts are exposed. The lower part has a wooden treadle and a metal flywheel about the size of a racing bicycle wheel, mounted on the left side of the bench. I guess the flywheel weighs ten kilos or more.
