So, the encode finished. Seems I'm saving about 10 to 15 minutes per encode using "Performance Mode" on the MS-A2. It doesn't quite get me back to 5950X encoding times, but close enough that it doesn't matter.

Hrmm, gonna see if I can't cut down the MS-A2 AV1 encode times. I'm hoping that changing the performance profile will push the CPU a bit harder as I'd like to get it close to the 5950X encode times.

My first 10 GbE connection at home is an uplink between my UDM-SE and the new USW-Pro-Max-16. Never had 10 Gbit/s before. 😊

Now I have lot more PoE and 2.5 GbE ports, which will give me plenty of power for more awesome hardware in the future. ✨

Da war ich die Tage mal im Büro ... da lacht mich im Elektroschrott ein HP ProDesk 600 G3 MT i7-7700 an. Den durfte ich mitnehmen. Aus anderen Kisten 32GB RAM zusammengesucht und zu Hause die alten SSD und Festplattenbestände durchgesehen.

Nun läuft darauf ein Proxmox auf SSD und als Datengrab ein 660GB ZFS raidz (Raid5) Pool - für 0 Euro 😃

Im IDLE verbraucht der unter 15 Watt.

Neben dem Stress mit dem Handy habe ich einen #Cluster aus drei Nodes im #Homelab gebaut. #Proxmox kannte ich schon, verclustert habe ich noch nicht draus gebastelt. Und #Ceph ist für mich noch Neuland. Es gibt noch viel zu entdecken... 🤓

This should be the last minirack post for awhile as it's 99.9% finished. It was a very fun build, and it's a heluva-lot quieter than what it replaced. I did lose network bandwidth, but the new cluster does exactly what it's supposed to. Live migrations are fast enough, iSCSI network means that the VMs are snappy storage-wise. The PiKVM + Switch fits perfectly in the basement.

The dual fans fixed the issue of the top Minisforum MS-A2 baking from the heat of the RPis, and the QNAP switch is a beast. I definitely recommend building in a minirack as they're adorable and very, very capable.

Got the fan grills in which significantly lowers the chances of me putting a finger or cable into one of the rear ventilation fans which totally hasn't happened.

Two Noctua NF-A9 fans mounted to a ventilated 2U plate. On the fans there are two silver fan grills to prevent my fingers from being sliced.

The Noctual NF-A9 2U ventilation plate installed below the QNAP switch to draw the RPi heat out of the rack instead of letting the Minisform MS-A2 try to use the warm air for cooling.

#homelab network UPS is working again (ok, I replaced the broken inverter/charger/transfer switch for $160) and now - three days of no-power runtime and time-shifting a whopping 120w away from peak. 🤓 It only saves $60/year but it's kind of fun since I have the storage capacity already.

A graph with watts as the y axis and time as the x axis. The power draw starts at roughly 120W, drops to 0W at 3pm, and at 11pm, rises up to 700W for an hour or so, dropping to 480W, and then back down to about 120. An indicator at the top right of the graph indicates that the current power draw is 123.1W.

Me: I'm going to bed.
Me: Oh. Let me do this thing real quickly.
An hour passes.
Me: Oh shit. I was supposed to sleep.

On the plus side, my #Homarr page is starting to look nice.
