My first White-plumed Honeyeater

White-plumed Honeyeaters are common and wide-spread, according to my bird book, but this is the first one I’ve identified. I spotted it at Mary Flynn Campground on the Turon River in New South Wales. It’s an unassuming little bird, with plumage of soft greys and yellows, and quite large eyes relatively speaking.

In the photo, below the yellow face, you can just make out the white stripe that gives the bird the name “white-plumed”. Personally, I’d expected a grander plume to match the name, but there you go.

Approximate length: 15-17 cm

Nectar-eating bird with naked, iridescent blue skin around the eye surrounded by black feathers. Also has a black bib and a white line separating the bib from the helmet, extending from the base of the beak down the length of its body. Wings are an olive green. Amazing what you see when you’re watching something else! I was photographing Vervet Monkeys at Werribee Zoo when this New Holland Honeyeater landed in the bush next to me. There were no flowers, so I think he was just curious.
