The Real Disorder Isnโt Encampments. Itโs a System That Pretends Shelters Are Accessible When They Arenโt:
Such an excellent post by Lanrick Bennett, in response to Robin Urback's G&M article on encampments.
"Real solutions do not come from criminalizing desperation or relabeling enforcement as compassion.
They come from:
- truly accessible, trauma-informed shelter options, not mats on floors;
- expanded 24/7 warming centres, open before the cold becomes lethal;
- deeply affordable, supportive housing, scaled to actual need;
- policy reform, including the repeal of laws like Bill 60;
- working directly with encampment residents, rather than pushing them out of sight;
- ending the political theatre of encampment clearings, which simply displace people without solving the crisis."
