I've just finished reading Mud Sweeter than Honey by Margo Rejmer. It's a collection of interviews with various Albanians about life under #Hoxha's totalitarian regime. I heartily recommend it.
What's always striking and terrifying about states is the number of people who are needed to run the various government departments and systems, not just the repressive, torturing police and secret services, full in the knowledge of the cruelty and violence they were enabling.
