Hi @mfi, I just did a search for #HumanGeography and your introduction was one of the few posts I found. Any recommendations on accounts/ servers to dig into for human geography insights?

I'm particularly intrigued by the idea of the net as a "place", or online spaces as "places", in the way that term is used as an analytical frame within human geography. Also the degree to which a digital human geography might overlap with a digital anthropology, and what distinguishes these approaches.

new blogpost in #paysages: “Personal perception of the 2025 august #wildfire in the #Corbières (#Aude/ #MediterraneanFrance)”

"The images of the Corbières wildfire motivated me to publish a slightly revised version of my text on my ‚paysages‘ blog, which I sent to Bloomberg journalist Joe Wertz (see below in Italic).

The Corbières‘ wildfire – or “L’incendie du massif des Corbières de 2025” – how the fire is called in French is the second largest wild fire in France since 1949. The largest and deadliest forest fire in France was the 1949 Landes forest fire, in which 50,000 hectares (500 km2) of forest land were burnt[1] – and 82 people killed. In the Corbières currently (08.08.2025), about 17.000 ha of forest & garrigues bushlands were consumed by flames."

Taken 10 years ago, but even more relevant today – in both of the countries where I hold citizenship.

The subeditor in me is just itching to stick a caret in there.

I'm endlessly fascinated by how we use the city as a substrate not just for art, but for communication and raw human expression. When I first started this project I made separate IG accounts for what I saw as different aspects of the project: @ if.these.walls was for stuff like this, @ it.must.be.a.sign was for weird and funny signs, and my main account was for the more traditional urban landscape photography. I've done away with that compartmentalisation here, partly because it was a hassle but more because the parts feel like they want to be a whole.

Anyway. Expect more landscapes and less graff as I work my way forward through the archives. But for now enjoy Melbourne's sharehouse dramas writ large on laneway walls.

Graffiti in black marker on a turquoise brick wall reads "Patrick is a rat". The word "thieving" is written underneath and between "a" and "rat" with the implication that it should be inserted between the two words. Additional graffiti shapes in various colours are visible at the edges of the shot.

Look, I can't say I'm having a whole lot of fun right now – what with the collapse of democracy in my country of birth and its repercussions for the entire world.

But at the peak of the AIDS epidemic, activists had a saying: "In the morning we bury our friends, in the afternoon we protest, and at night we dance." Because joy is freedom. Laughter is freedom.

Doing my best to keep dancing.

Graffiti on a cement wall reads FUN CLUB in black spray paint. Next to the text in green spray paint is a drawing of a human eye, with lines emanating from the top of the eye that are suggestive of a crown. Sparse vines spread across the upper part of the wall.

One Planet, Many Worlds: The Climate Parallax by Dipesh Chakrabarty, 2023

A historian offers a unique look at the pandemic, climate change, and the human versus nonhuman.

@bookstodon

Climate change represents a deep conundrum for humans. It is difficult for humans to give up the unequal and yet accelerating pursuit of a good life based on an insatiable appetite for energy sourced mainly from fossil fuel. But the same pursuit, scientists insist, damages the geobiological system that supports the existence of interrelated forms of life, including ours, on this planet. The planet, seen thus, is one. The global sway of financial and extractive capital connects humans technologically, but they remain divided along multiple axes of inequality. Their worlds are many and their politics still global rather than planetary. In the narrative presented here, Chakrabarty continues to explore the temporal and intellectual fault lines that mark the collapse of the global and the planetary in human history.

Un/intentional street poetry.

(Sticker text, for those with small screens and/or old eyes like mine: "Every single person you pass is a constellation of memory and perception as huge and rich and unique as whatever is inside of you. The terra incognita of every gaze, Saul Bellow calls it.")

A close-up photo of an exterior wall in a laneway. The wall is covered in spray-painted graffiti and numerous torn and faded paper stickers featuring the tags of graffers. At the top is a sticker printed with the following text: "Every single person you pass is a constellation of memory and perception as huge and rich and unique as whatever is inside of you. The terra incognita of every gaze, Saul Bellow calls it."

The day this immigrant first discovered chokos.

"The humble choko is often seen as nothing more than a creeping wild vine across Australian backyards, sheds and neighbourhoods, but this fruit has a long and travelled history.

Originating in Mexico, where it was a staple food for the Aztecs and other indigenous societies, the choko travelled from Central America to Europe during the Columbian exchange in the 16th century. From there, it traversed Asia and, finally, came to Australia.

... While it’s better known in Chinese cuisine as a staple vegetable with various cooking methods, the history of its culinary use in Australia is far different.

... Chokos in Australia were known as a ’filler’ for low-income families during the Great Depression. Given the choko's ability to grow wild and yield plenty of crops, it was seen as a free backyard source of fibre and nutrition. I can understand why some people can’t touch choko if they ate it a lot in their younger years and got sick of it – I’m not sure I would want to eat it a couple of times a week."
