My experiment of growing a Marigold in my Kratky-style hydroponic setup. I wanted it to keep away pests...but also because its nice to see such a happy flower while there's snow outside.
I also have spinach and Swiss chard, and the very start of a strawberry plant.

I left my 2 hydroponic tomato plants to basically fend for themselves over Dec/Jan (bar watering). One died. The other went triffid 🍅 #Hydroponics #HomeGrown #Vegetables #Gardening

#KnowledgeByte: #Hydroponics is a method of growing plants in a water based, nutrient rich solution. Hydroponics does not use soil, instead the root system is supported using an inert medium.

#Gardening adventures in #hydroponics:
I moved my hydroponic gardens into the garage to keep the cats out. I put a space heater by them and pondered if they would stay warm enough for winter.
They lasted 3 or so weeks but stopped growing pretty quickly. They finally started to wither, and I had to toss them.
I never feel too bad about a failure I can learn from, though. It was fun!
The indoor #garden is going well! I just spent 2 hours (oof!) cleaning them out and adding new, fresh water. It usually takes about half that, but there were special circumstances today:
- Both Jerry and Julie were determined to fall over and I had to redo their support cables.
- A foot came off the pump in the second garden so I had to fiddle around to reattach it.
- I also rigged a couple unfolded paperclips to hold a sponge onto the new pump in the second garden, since it doesn't fit in the built-in housing.
- I figured out that the reservoir DOES come off the base of the second garden; you just have to remove a screw. I don't remember that being in the instructions. (I promptly lost the screw. Sigh.)
I've been getting a good amount of peppers from the jalapeno plants. Ripe peppers are so good, still definitely worth the effort.
I'm also pleased with my cilantro harvest! Finally, success with cilantro! It only took several attempts! 😂

My latest indoor gardening experiments are working! I now have sprouts on my hydroponic purple sweet potato, ginger, and re-growing green onions. I should have edible green onions by early next week. The other two are longer term projects.
Today's the day the indoor plants get their plant food so I guess that means they all just got their Christmas dinner.

Survivors 2070 Part Two: Life Inside Halo Arc
Settling Into Orbit
Halo Arc never stopped moving. It circled Earth every ninety minutes. The residents learned to live with constant sunrise and sunset through the observation windows. They worked, slept, and grew food in a rotating schedule.
Hydroponic bays stretched across the inner rings. Rows of green vegetables lined transparent channels. AI monitored pH levels, moisture, and growth rates. The replicators handled protein blocks, yeast-based nutrients, and an experimental fish culture.
Marcus inspected a malfunctioning pump with two engineers.
“We have twenty hours before the lettuce batch fails,” he said.
Engineer Sato frowned. “We can reroute the water feed. The tubing needs welding.”
“Print it,” Marcus said. “Send the specs to Fabricator Three.”
3D printers have evolved beyond anything from the early century. They used recycled materials, vacuum formed alloys, and programmable carbon. The team could replace almost anything except the station’s largest structural sections.
Social Life
The residents rotated through education modules. Children learned physics, agriculture, and languages. Adults worked six-hour shifts. Every person had duties. Trust kept the station alive.
During a community meeting, a teacher, Lila Nakamura, raised a concern.
“The children are asking about the world below. They see the frozen clouds and want answers.”
Alina nodded. “Tell them the truth. Earth is cold but not gone. We watch and wait. When temperatures return, we return.”
A young father stood. “Do we know when that will be?”
“No,” Alina said. “But we prepare every day.”
Problems Appear
The first major issue came with the oxygen garden. A fungal infection spread through the moss beds. The AI flagged it within minutes. Engineers isolated the bay and began sterilizing.
Marcus briefed the command team.
“If we lose two more beds, we drop below safe oxygen levels.”
Colonel Rajan asked, “Do we have a backup?”
“We can grow new cultures, but it takes time.”
“Do it,” she said. “No delays.”
The crew worked through the night. Replicators printed sterilized trays. Biologists introduced new moss samples. By morning, the infection was gone.

Out of 6 aerogarden pods only 3 sprouted well this time. Humpf!
I'll reseed the duds with my best sprouting seeds. I tried to mix it up a bit this time, but it didn't work so well. Now I know why I usually stick with the same two types of lettuce...they are old faithful sprouters.
I wrote a post about passive #hydroponics https://pirogov.de/blog/passive-hydroponics/
If you feel like you do not have a green thumb for #growing in soil or your space outside is limited, maybe hydroponics is worth a try!
It is not as difficult as it looks like, just less familiar. It is both cleaner and more transparent than classical #gardening.
