@lynn did you know there was an alternative to the official Protonmail bridge. I’ve had a hard time setting up the official bridge on guix (OS) and my first contribution to guix was actually to package this alternative named #hydroxide, therefore available in guix now. We can even plan a small video-interaction to show you if you are interested 🤷

Finally got #hydroxide package (#protonmail bridge by @emersion) to be merged into #guix. This was my first contribution to #guix. Still need to figure out how to fluidify the process.

set up #hydroxide on #android, can finally use #protonmail with the good apps #fossgirlies

2023-06-25

@parvXm Protonmail charges for their bridge but there is a 3rd party FOSS package called #hydroxide.

But note that hydroxide broke for me recently. It also uses the shitty #golang, where the core devs don’t know the difference between a socks proxy and an http proxy. It’s actually wrongly named in the language and that incorrect naming bled into hydroxide. Anyway, fwiw.

2022-12-28

@bojkotiMalbona I understand how to work around it. The “pointless” comment was because #hydroxide’s IMAP support is little more than an over-engineered local mail spool.

2022-12-27

@bojkotiMalbona TIL about #hydroxide

“For now, [IMAP] only supports unencrypted local connections.”
github.com/emersion/hydroxide#

Well, that sounds both terrible *and* pointless.

@Katy @k8vsy #Protonmail pushes CAPTCHA sometimes, unlike #tutanota PM’s app is not on #FDroid, & you’re trapped on their vulnerable javascript-based client unless you subscribe to their bridge or use #Hydroxide (but hydroxide was broken last time I checked). Protonmail also ditched the fedi & went exclusively #Twitter for announcements, calling into question their digital rigthts commitment

2022-10-30

#Protonmail (whose microblogging presence is limited to Elon Musk’s assets) has become quite a burden in the past couple yrs. #Hydroxide is broken, thus pushing us to use the web client (because #Electronmail is broken too), and the web client periodically pushes a CAPTCHA. So it’s a game of trying to login as infrequently as possible, yet if too much time passes your acct is dead.

2022-09-09

#Protonmail is playing a cat-mouse game with #Hydroxide, the FOSS alternative to PM’s bridge, and Protonmail is winning (sadly enough): github.com/emersion/hydroxide/

@thunderbird @protonmail @loveisgrief #Hydroxide is more needed for Tutanota since Tutanota doesn’t even have a bridge of their own. But it would also be more complex to add an interface for Tutanota since they don’t simply use openpgp but rather something home-baked IIUC.

@loveisgrief @protonmail @thunderbird There is also #hydroxide. In principle you should be able to run hydroxide on a trusted server, then configure your phone MUA to connect to your IMAP server (which is what the bridge gives you). Just a matter of putting a hole in your firewall.

2022-06-06

@drivs @phryk not only is it tor-accessible, but protonmail has an onion host so you can bypass the tor exit node. Unfortunately #hydroxide is hard-coded to use the clearnet site, but if you run a distro that still supports Electron, then Electronmail gives the option to use protonmail’s onion host.

@frankie @joel FYI there is a 3rd party app #hydroxide that gives an IMAP bridge at no cost. But indeed Protonmail doesn’t get credit for that and their statement remains a #hypocrisy.

@thatbrickster @orekix @Hyolobrika @inference The flaw with #Protonmail is that it relies on on-the-fly #JavaScript. A smart user can use #Electronmail or #hydroxide to counter the threat of malicious JS, but then when Protonmail pushes their #CAPTCHA things get dicey.

@eloquence @cnx BTW, this article is good but misses an important point: web.archive.org/web/freedom.pr Harlo Holmes warns that malicious js could compromise users but gives no remedy to that. She should suggest #ElectronMail & #Hydroxide as ways to avoid on-the-fly javascript.

@kzimmermann @dianoetic And for expert users there is #Hydroxide which is leaner & also benefits from static js (as #Electronmail does)... right up until #Protonmail pushes a CAPTCHA, at which point Hydroxide falls over & (bloated) #Electronmail becomes essential. The use case for hydroxide is that sometimes experts need to talk to normies & doing a key exchange is enough to alienate normies.
