Highlights from the Report #2026 ( 2026) - World inequality report: wir2026.wid.world/insight/exec

Fewer than 60,000 people – 0.001% of the world’s population – control three times as much wealth as the entire bottom half of humanity, according to the authoritative World Inequality Report 2026, based on data compiled by 200 researchers, that argues global inequality has reached such extremes that urgent action has become essential.

A moderate 3% global tax on fewer than 100,000 of the world's richest would raise over 750 billion dollars annually and is one of the solutions to combatting global inequality according to authors of the World Inequality Report 2026. FRANCE 24's Jean-Emile Jammine speaks with Ricardo Gomez-Carrera, researcher at the World Inequality Lab and co-editor of the World Inequality Report 2026.

World Inequality Report 2026
wir2026.wid.world/

Here is an inequality outlook comparison for two countries: the United States and Sweden (everything is PPP adjusted). It is worth taking few minutes to find everything interesting For example:

• In Sweden, the bottom 50% have negative wealth[1] but almost twice as high a PPP-adjusted income as their counterparts in the US.

• The Swedish Middle 40% has higher income and almost as wealthy as the US counterpart.

• The Top 10% have the same share (%) of total wealth while the US has significantly higher income.

• Top 1% in the US has 8 percentage points higher share of total (%).

[1]: Swedish mortgage system is special. Historically high proportion of variable-rate mortgages and required low amortization (100 year mortgages exist). Sweden has 180% Dept to Income Ratio in 2024! Some claim it's not a problem: "Swedish household debt is not too high: Look at solvency and liquidity, not debt to income"

In the United States the top 10% of earners receive
47% of total income, while the bottom 50%
account for only 13%. Wealth inequality is
even more concentrated, with the richest
10% holding 70% of total wealth and the top
1% alone holding 35%. Average income per
capita is 47,400 euros (PPP), and average
wealth stands at 264,700 euros (PPP).

In Sweden the top 10% of
earners receive 29% of total income, while
the bottom 50% account for 25%. Wealth
is more concentrated, with the richest 10%
holding 68% of total wealth and the top
1% holding 27%, while the bottom 50%
have negative net wealth at -11%. Average
income per capita is 44,000 euros (PPP),
and average wealth reaches 195,000 euros
(PPP). Female labor
participation declined from 41.9% to 40.5%
over the same period.

" is a choice. It is the result of our , , and structures. The costs of escalating inequality are clear: widening divides, fragile , and a borne most heavily by those least responsible. But the possibilities of reform are equally clear. Where is strong, is fair, and investment is prioritized, inequality narrows."

RE: ohai.social/@redsad/1156962237

Why my father's wealth play roles on me? OK, I know many fathers (Especially I in this unequal world) want give something to their children, but there should be a limit. That big amounts accumulate for generations and causes a big, HUGE (Multiply your thought with min. 100) gap between riches and median wealth. Actually if they have arguments, I don't interested in listening them, but if you who read this post have ideas, I would read.

Visualising the world’s wealthiest people…versus the world’s poorest.

This gives a scale of gaping chasm that exists between the very richest and poorest and has only got considerably worse in my lifetime (as I approach my mid to late 40’s).

But we now know we could round them up in a medium sized stadium…if only.

"If you focus on the conflict between left and right, if the most important thing is what you are—your party, your state, your race, your ethnicity—the people I met could not be more different. On the one hand, you have rural, white small-business owners, generations into building a life in this country. On the other, you have urban Latino, Haitian, African, and South Asian immigrants, every one of them a worker. The line between them is sharp, almost tribal. What could they possibly have in common?

Everything—if you look at what they need. The people I met as a commissioner may look different, but what they need is surprisingly the same: They need a government that gives them a level playing field against the powerful and wealthy. They need the courts to check corporations when they abuse that power and wealth. They need basic dignity and control in their material lives.

Looking at things that way, everyone I met was part of one huge group: people working themselves to the bone who were getting screwed by billionaires and corporations—regardless of party or state or race or ethnicity. Regardless, even, of whether they are workers or the owners of farms or small businesses.

Populism is not an indictment, but an opportunity. Focusing on the conflict between the haves and the have-nots is not divisive; it’s a way to build coalitions with astonishing potential."
