Since informalscience.org was down (probably due to ongoing manufactured funding chaos), I've downloaded the NISE reports that fellow evaluator Amy Grack Nelson shared. It's about 10 years of previously publicly available reports from museums and nonprofit organizations.

If there's interest here, I can share the link, but I don't want to give the bots/scrapers more fuel.

Exploring the Interplay of Lifewide Learning, Migration, and Social Network Sites in the Postdigital Field of Action
Yolanda López García
Abstract: Lifewide learning encompasses all forms of learning and personal development in formal, non-formal and informal modalities. This article discusses the relationship between Lifewide Learning, Social Network Sites (SNSs) and migration by reflecting on the
role of SNSs as a resource for informal learning in the context of migration and its impact on the postdigital field of action. This article argues that SNSs are fields of action that are ubiquitously used and are deeply interwoven in everyday life, especially for people who wish to/or have already relocated. In these fields of action, interaction, emotional support and constant learning take place, impacting the lives and experiences of people undergoing migration. Therefore, this article considers that SNSs are highly relevant resources for learning ‘informally’, where sharing personal experiences not only provides concrete information regarding a situation but perhaps, more importantly, people who
share or seek information find companionship in the realization that they are not alone with their doubts or situations in their new location.

Taking a break from a massive and poorly scoped (despite my many and varied efforts otherwise) literature review.

To the surprise of no one, it turns out there's a lot out there about online learning environments, but finding any work that is rooted in actual and actionable equity is a rare thing (apparently) (so far) (lolsob) :yell:

It's early days of my search, but I'm not feeling confident about any aspect of this!

A meme using the old TV commercial with three older white women examining something that is supposedly a hamburger. Two are squinting at it, and the other is lifting up and feeling part of the bun.

Instead of saying, "where's the beef?" the text reads, "Where's the equity?"

Please...informal learning, library, museum, zoo, aquarium, historical site, science center folks:

Invest in the personnel, effort, and time to thoroughly develop not only your goals, outcomes, and processes, but the implications of them - all of this reveals your values.

Relatedly, stop putting this (rarely done) work on grant writers and/or interns.

Signed,

A proposal reviewer

@Anneheathen FWIW, I've seen this with some museum curation efforts (which I understand as a former cataloger is related but not the same). I've also read evaluation studies about the efficacy of such tagging elements in museum learning outcomes, community curation, and attitudinal changes.

I guess it depends on the purpose of this functionality. Are they for a discovery aid, community building, highlighting different epistemologies and ontologies?

@DigitalScholarX 1/ The book highlights informal and incidental learning, where most significant learning occurs on the job. This becomes even more important in a complex world. #informallearning #complexity

Learning-based complex work: how to reframe learning and development

The following is excerpted from Watkins, K.E. and Marsick, V.J., 2023. Chapter 4. Learning informally at work: Reframing learning and development. In Rethinking Workplace Learning and Development. Edward Elgar Publishing.

This chapter’s final example illustrates the way in which organically arising IIL (informal and incidental learning) is paired with opportunities to build knowledge through a combination of structured education and informal learning by peers working in frequently complex circumstances.

Reda Sadki, president of The Geneva Learning Foundation (TGLF), rethought learning and development (L&D) for immunization workers in many roles in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).

Adapting to technology available to participants from the countries that joined this effort, Sadki designed a mix of experiences that broke out of the limits of “training” as it was often designed by conventional learning and development practitioners.

He addressed, the inability to scale up to reach large audiences; difficulty to transfer what is learned; inability to accommodate different learners’ starting places; the need to teach learners to solve complex problems; and the inability to develop sufficient expertise in a timely way. (Marsick et al., 2021, p. 15)

This led his organization, to invite front-line staff from all levels of immunization systems in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) to create and share new learning in response to the social and behavioral challenges they faced.

Sadki designed learning and development for “in-depth engagement on priority topics,” insights into “the raw, unfiltered perspectives of frontline staff,” and peer dialogue that “gives a voice to front-line workers” (The Geneva Learning Foundation, 2022).

A good question from @TeaKayB about #InformalLearning in #museums, though for me "standards" (as well as the similar phrase "best practices" that isn't used here) aren't part of my practice because of the need for cultural responsiveness. So much depends on context, eh? Still, I sense that he's searching for comparisons or places to start.

Ideas? Reply in his thread below.

@TeaKayB To be clear, are you specifically searching for "object-based learning" theoretical approaches, or more how objects/artworks are incorporated into other theories and frameworks?

For example, both the general Montessori and inquiry-centered frameworks use objects/artworks, but they aren't central to either.

I think I remember some evaluation reports on the subject, but it depends what we're really discussing.

My son has started skateboarding lessons. I've been noticing the parallels between the general acceptance of street sports like this as legit and the general acceptence of popular music genres in schools.

I've also been thinking about the ways in which these sports are often learned—outside of school, within friend groups, through personal interest, and through imitation.

Sounds familiar. 🤔

We analyzed #TTRPG / #DnD / #DungeonsandDragons sessions to examine how #TTRPGs can support #SEL (#socialemotionallearning ) skills and found that the game space + facilitators allowed youth to practice complex reflection and conflict resolution.
