Just playing with a "new" infrared camera (Nikon D3200). Such a sweet little camera. #infraredphotography #nikon #photography #colorado

If you are shopping for a converted (infrared) camera ... consider the D3200. It's so nice.

Digital #aerchrome is a little cooked to edit. Although the raw orange looks great sometimes, the #tennesee wilds look alien in #red and #pink

I still struggle with balancing the edit and the white balance when shooting infrared. It's a real struggle to try to match to aerochrome's colors or leave it amber with #kolori #irchrome

A blue truck decays in a field next to a telephone pole. The grass and trees are red and pink like the infrared film aerochrome. The sky is a deep blue peaking behind a have of distant cloudsSomeone's oranged-tinged truck, stands besides a clump of wildflowers, spray painted with old splotches of black. It lackes it's wheel fender, bumber, and most of the bed except for a small platform that holds a generator. Behind it the forest is a slight more burned shaded of orange. On the far left another cab rusts, and above a wire drops across the frame where desaturated clouds bloom and block the sky.A stone house sits abandoned near a fence and a tall treeline. The entire imagine is toned red with infrared light and grass is blurred as if I'm motion. Vines crawl of sections of brick. And large evenly spaced windows dive into deep shadow.

A quick stop at Mono Lake turned into a powerful moment behind the lens. This image was taken using an 830nm deep infrared filter on my full spectrum camera. The light at this wavelength lies well beyond human vision, giving these tufa towers an otherworldly glow and pulling dramatic contrast from midday light—something visible-light photography struggles with.

These limestone formations are created by the chemical dance between carbonate-rich springs and the lake’s alkaline waters. Mono Lake is full of them, standing like natural sculptures etched by time and elements.

Whenever I shoot nature in black and white—especially infrared—I can’t help but think of Ansel Adams. Whether or not he truly embraced IR is debated, but his influence on how we see contrast and composition is undeniable.

I captured this frame with my 830nm “deep infrared” filter on a full-spectrum camera during a mid-day stop at Mono Lake, California. This wavelength is well beyond the visible spectrum, creating dramatic black-and-white images with dark skies and bright highlights. It always makes me think of Ansel Adams. Some say he loved infrared film, others say he preferred traditional black-and-white with a red filter for contrast. Either way, I think of him when shooting nature sans color. The tufa tower shown here is made of limestone formed when carbonate-rich springs—often called “soda springs”—flow into alkaline lakes and precipitate minerals. Mono Lake is famous for these unique and sometimes towering formations.

Recent junkyard shoot with Selena in #infrared, which not only gave a surreal, otherworldly feel, but enhanced the decay of the rusted out hulks of old vehicles that dotted the premises. Floating the Sacramento River in early April, I brought along my 720nm infrared filter to capture the spring foliage in a different light—literally. With a full-spectrum camera and reversed red/blue channels in post, the newly leafed deciduous trees glow in near-white, contrasting beautifully with the stark, lifeless snags.

This quiet moment, with my son casting for trout nearby, turned into an unexpectedly poetic capture—life and death frozen in IR.

While taking a lazy float on the Sacramento River with my son in his drift boat, I kept an eye out for scenes to shoot with my new 720-nanometer infrared filter on a full-spectrum modified camera. I picked up this filter with fresh spring foliage in mind, and the deciduous trees around Redding, California, were just leafing out on this early April day. New growth contains high levels of chlorophyll, making it especially reflective in the near-infrared spectrum. The 720nm filter blocks visible light except the deep red edge, allowing near-IR to pass. Most digital sensors can see up to ~1000nm—far beyond human vision.

In post, swapping the red and blue channels gives a subtle bluish sky (which comes out red straight from the camera), and custom white balance helps produce bright, surreal foliage.

As my son anchored to cast for trout, I noticed the contrast between pale new leaves and the dark dead snags—an eerie but beautiful scene.
