Still a WIP, as I just had the time to finish the etching and clean the plate, but not to do a first test print. By the look of the plate alone it seems quite ok, the picture stayed readable. I'm happy because nothing was sure, like with all complex aquatints I reached a point where the plate state was too confusing and I relied on instinct to "paint" the last tones. The main doubt I have now is if the dark tones are dark enough, as the acid bath was a bit dull. We'll see when I can proof-print it at last 🙂

"Grass snake". Aquatint etching, with roulette and burnisher touches. 20 x 25 cm.

Strictly speaking it's still a WIP as I just saw one part where I'll add a shadow, but apart from that I consider it done.

I'm quite happy with it, during the whole process I feared adding a detail or messing up something that would make it lose its "organic" feel, but it didn't happen. Even if lights and shadows aren't so realistic (have you ever looked closely at light playing on a snake's scales? It's crazy!), they bring the effect I wanted and it still looks like a convincing enough snake to me :D

WIP, continuing my grass snake etching. As planned, I've burnished some area on scales to act as highlights. Will see in some hours how it looks when printed. Probably less noticeable.

Also, I've forced a bit the photo contrast because, as usual, taking a great looking picture of a polished copper plate is near impossible.

Grafikmesse Stand mit Bilder und Bücher.

WIP. Proof print of the latest progress on my little grass snake. I've used aquatint to add three shades of surfaces after the line-only etching. I've often had bad surprises with aquatint, but I'm happy with this one, it looks close to what I envisioned.

The next step will be to add highlights by burnishing the aquatint texture in some places. Also maybe add some shadows. And I plan to find the best mix of brown and green ink to print it. Stay tuned :)
