Electronics beginner kits
Iāve been looking at several of these on eBay and they all seem to be to be too complex to start a person off with
Admittedly what a manufacturer would like to call a ābeginnerā kit with a ārandomā selection of useful components is likely to be whatever surplus nonsense they can get cheap, so thereās that
But even from the sellers that seem to be putting effort in (and charging appropriately) thereās really no such thing as a beginnerās electronics starter kit these days
I might put one together myself and see how this project goes over time (no big hurry) ā Iām pretty sure I can pick a useful selection of components and parts that would really work for starting youngsters off on the path to electronics
For a start, Iād have a few battery holders with flying leads and some old-fashioned little torch light bulbs (still available) (prob 3V would do, a pair of AA would suffice) and hookup wire and croc clips and stuff, although, those old big plastic (still available) torch light bulb holders have screw terminals so thatās good
Then some switches, a wire wound variable resistor if available (or carbon track one that can handle torch lightbulb current without scorching the track) and thatās stage 1, really, thatās all you need to begin ā more than one bulb, more than one switch, series configurations, parallel configurations, thatās a lot to learn really ā the explanations can be on little cards accompanying this little selection, how to hook it up, what exactly is happening
Then from there, add more in a meaningful progression
What most of the starter kits you can get now have is a breadboard and hookup wires and little breadboard PSU, a selection of resistors, caps, LEDS, tiny push buttons, few other things like that, and then the next step up they go all the way to chucking in an arduino! (Cheap clone of course, and I mean cheap)
It might be an impressive component count and didnāt cost much, but in reality itās not actually useful ā the ones you can get for about twelve quid
We can do better
