2025-06-13 Inventor's Notebook
Half of today will be more lab setup and cleaning, the other half turning my many notes from this week into evergreen notes in #obsidian . I have all the old raspberry pi 3s running device monitoring tasks and running node exporter to my Prometheus server. Now every major service running in the lab can be seen from one place #prometheus . Soon I will monitor logs with #promtail and #loki for most nodes in the lab.

En plena fiebre del oro en California, allá por 1853, los mineros necesitaban ropa resistente que aguantara el trabajo duro. Fue entonces cuando un inmigrante alemán llamado *Levi Strauss* llegó con un cargamento de lonas para tiendas de campaña.
Un cliente le dijo: “Lo que necesitamos no son tiendas: ¡son pantalones que no se rompan!”
*Levi* tuvo una idea: usó su lona para fabricar pantalones ultraresistentes. Pero no estaba solo. Un sastre llamado *Jacob Davis* tenía otro problema: los bolsillos de sus clientes siempre se descosían. Así que añadió remaches metálicos en los puntos de tensión.
Ambos unieron fuerzas y en 1873 patentaron el primer pantalón de mezclilla con remaches: habían nacido los #Jeans.
Inicialmente, eran solo para trabajadores: mineros, rancheros, obreros. Pero en los años 50, gracias a Hollywood y estrellas como *James Dean*, se convirtieron en símbolo de rebeldía juvenil.
Desde entonces, han evolucionado en mil formas: rotos, ajustados, anchos, de colores, pero su esencia sigue siendo la misma.

Staging microcontroller boards for mesh network experiments. Using 3D printer to create cases for the boards. Replacement server arrives tomorrow, so I'm creating a Kanban plan for installation and migration. I changed the name of the microblog to "Inventor's Notebook."

After recent days' setup and repairs, it's time for an extra thorough lab cleanup. Time to reorder cleaning supplies. I'm enjoying setting up lab monitoring and thinking of anomaly detection tools to create, but I'm really looking forward to more prototyping.

Multiple problems arise at once, tempting one to panic:

1. NUT (open source electronic device software) finds the cyberpower UPS fine, but not the OPTI-UPS. I haven't found the answer, but one clue might be that a custom cable is needed for the optiups driver to work. Seriously?

2. During all this reconfiguration, one of the servers stopped talking to me. I think sorting this out takes priority over solving the NUT problem. #inventor #laboratory #Freelance

Anyone else learn that something you've invented (and patented) for the company four years earlier has finally made it into a product... from the public launch announcement? ... or is it just me ('cause I'm not paying enough attention during development)?

Inventor's Log: The weekend power outage exposed weakness in the UPS setup in the lab. Yesterday, I replaced the batteries in the rack mount UPS and added UPS to the workbench. Where do I begin? My black lab (not the dog) workbench, with a busy scene of invention and construction going on. There are hand-scribbled notes, a third hand helper with a name tag, an AA battery holder, a metal box with things in process of being fitted to it, the stand part of an old monitor, assorted cable clippers and strippers, standoffs, crimpers, my gloriously colourful HAKKO soldering station, a level square, and a tiny PIR sensor module.

#HappyBirthday to Elijah McCoy, the real McCoy behind the phrase "The Real McCoy". McCoy was born May 2nd, 1844, in Colchester, Ontario, to George and Mildred Goins McCoy. At the time, they were fugitive slaves who had escaped from Kentucky to Ontario via helpers through the Underground Railroad. He was trained in Scotland as an engineer and would hold 57 patents for new inventions at the end of his career.
