#inverts

I usually like to use current photos for #ArtAdventCalendar (Day 09) but yesterday I was only out long enough to cut a little wood + too lazy to take photos of decorations..lol So! as we approach Winter Solstice, views from the opposite side of the year as we approached Summer Solstice. I chose shots with a lot of shadow as a reminder that there always needs to be a balance between Light + Dark #animist #pagan #summer #florespondence #Bloomscrolling #butterfly #inverts #NativePlants #pollinators

The tip of a native pea plant (Lathyrus ochroleucus) emerges from dark green shadow to a bit of sun that lights a couple of golden green leaves and bracts along with a cluster of narrow tubular cream coloured flowers. One small butterfly- silver grey with white fringed wings adn almost electric blue painted on its centre- sits on the flower cluster while another flies toward the flowers, about to land. The background is shadowed foliage, with the edges darkened and blurred to enhance the already dark shadows, while the green -gold of leaves has been intensified emphasising the idea that the height of summer still holds darkness even while Sun is at peak.

I thought I was just taking photos of remaining leaves on Prunus tomentosa Nanking Cherry in the afternoon light. But, once I saw them closer on the computer screen I realised at least some of the leaves are no longer attached to the plant- some critter has made a wooly haven for ..? eggs (spider) or for their own transformation (caterpillar)? if all goes well over winter, new life will emerge from those leaves in the spring.. #nature #inverts #insects #arachnids #garden #Alberta #photography

A cluster of around a half dozen leaves clings to the tip of a thin green-brown erect twig, with several more twigs reaching up or sideways nearby, including a forked branch forming a bit of a Y running off the image to the right. The somewhat rough leaves are smallish, oval/oblong with toothed edges and deeply incised veins giving them a quilted look. they are uneven in colour, greenish gold overall, some spots green, some dull orangey with dark shadows below and in some of the veins. A closer examination shows some wooly/sily stuff between a couple of the leaves, and we can surmise that some sort of moth cocoon or spider egg mass has been placed inside with the leaves pulled together around it. Several of the leaves are attached to the mass by their tips and we note the stems that would have joined them to the branches are free in the air. Background is a mix of blue sky and green-brown trees blurred into wide irregular vertical stripes.

@plants A very short video (YouTube link here, #Spectra to follow) of several different bees busily working the composite flowers of Saussurea riederi an Asian Sawwort and cousin to Asters, in the #garden . With quirky, low-key music and a bit of wind and bird sound behind, maybe...
#nature #Bees #WildBees #NativeBees #BloomScrolling #Alberta #August #insects #inverts #pollinators #florespondence

Two bees- a smallish pale gold and black bumblebee and a leaner, smoother (low pale fuzz mostly on thorax) black leafcutter bee with thin white bands on abdomen, are busily working on a cluster of purply flower heads. Each 'flower' is actually a composite of many tiny florets which are light purple tubes emerging from a fuzzy white base. From the purple tubes, dark violet/nearly black thin structures- like grains of wild rice- emerge and those are tipped with the white actual flower sexy bits. The background is blurred green foliage, some sunlit some dark shadowed. There is a white border and in lower right in loose script the words 'bees love Saussureas!' in white.

Lucky to get an eye-level shot of a male eastern pondhawk #dragonfly. To me the neutral gray backdrop (more luck, no Photoshop gimmickry) helps give it a nice art illustration look. Lake Fairfax Park, Reston, Virginia, USA. 25-Aug-2025. #insects #insectphotography #naturephotography #inverts

A dragonfly perching at about a 45 degree angle on a green leaf. The dragonfly's body is mostly a light grayish blue, but the head is dark green. The out-of-focus background is a neutral gray.

A monarch #butterfly in a dreamy setting. Sterling, Virginia, USA. 14-Aug-2025. #insects #insectphotography #naturephotography #invert #inverts

A monarch butterfly seen from the side resting amidst a clump of bright yellow-green leaves and pink flowers. The butterfly is in focus but most of the flowers are very soft creating a dream-like appearance.

I enjoy #wildlifephotography but I'll never be a serious naturalist. I just don't have the patience to study the details necessary to tell me whether these #butterflies are black swallowtails, pipevine swallowtails, or dark morph eastern tiger swallowtails. Oh, and those flowers are either marsh milkweed, joe pye weed, or something else entirely. Alexandria, Virginia, USA 29JUL2025 #invert #inverts #insects #naturephotography #insectphotography

Two butterflies in different positions atop flat-topped pinkish flowers with many tiny blooms. The butterflies are black and blue overall with white or orange spots on the wing edges.

How about a #bee and #flower shot for a change? BONUS: Looks like there is another much smaller #insect in the other flower! Does anyone know what it is? #photography #naturephotography #insects #flowers #bees #invert #inverts #entomology #insectphotography

A honey bee is seen from above in the lower left of photo. The bee is on one of two small white flowers with traces of pink on them. There is also a much smaller delicate insect in the center of the other flower.

A big ol’ polyphemus moth that landed on the window the other day.
#moth #inverts

A very large and furry moth, perched on a window screen. It has big, brown and white wings, folded up so you can’t see the big eye spots. It also has huge, feathery, fern-like antennae.
