#ipaq

Question for the retrocomputing community. If I buy an ipaq now, is there a way to sync it with *nix systems or at least make it sync with a VM on KVM/Qemu?

Thanks in advance.

It wasn't #Unix, and it was in the year 2001. But I vividly remember running #Linux on a #Compaq #iPaq (Model H3600) my former employer gifted to me when I completed my training.
I was already done with #Windows at that time, so I ditched #Microsoft #PocketPC in favor of Linux. The distribution was called Lisa, IIRC. I had to invest into a sleeve and a 128MB Compact Flash card to enable Installation of a full LAMP-stack... had to compile it on the device...

Some basic but interesting differences between #PocketPC #WindowsMobile devices.

This shows how the #Dell Axim has different image icons compared to the #iPaq.

More info is in the image description of each one.

#PDA #WindowsCE #RetroComputing #Handheld #Handhelds

The Dell Axim X50V is running Windows Mobile 4 also known as 2003 Second Edition.

The VGA screen is beautiful but unfortunately the image icons don't really help to tell the user what the file is without having them named the way that I do.

Jpeg appears to show an Amiga boing ball and PNG, BMP and Gif are all represented by the same icon of colored shapes. The Dell Axim X51V is running Windows Mobile 5. A big OS upgrade over WM 4.0.

The VGA screen is once again beautiful but unfortunately not much has changed.

It appears the Amiga boing ball has been replaced with someone surfing or perhaps a sail boat but for images other than jpeg, they are all represented by the same icon of shapes. The iPaq HX2795b is similar to the Axim X51V in that they both run Windows Mobile 5.0. The iPaq does not have a VGA screen however.

Looking at the image icons we can see a huge improvement over the Dell Axim.

Every image type is represented by a uniquely descriptive icon. BMP = Blue, GIF = Green, PNG = Purple and JPEG = Red.

I wish the Axim had these icons...Last but not least is the iPaq 210. This one is running Windows Mobile 6.0 and has a beautiful VGA screen.

It also retains the icons of the previous iPaq.

Every image type is represented by a uniquely descriptive icon. BMP = Blue, GIF = Green, PNG = Purple and JPEG = Red.

I wonder if this was a change unique to the iPaqs?

@billgoats i have another one. In #soaring (flying planes without engines) we long used #ipaq s for navigation (screen sunlight readable), attached to the windshields. One pilot came to me and told me that his IPAQ would stall when the course of the plane was between 270 and 300 degrees. Somewhat perplexed I went looking and found out that the IRDA port in IPAQs had a bug, that would cause 100% cpu if the sun shone into the IRDA port. Firmware update fixed that.

Found newer Windows Mobile 6.5.3 images for HP iPAQ 214 than what was installed on my device, so decided to give an update a try๐Ÿคž๐Ÿป. Gosh, the ere are even some images for it - maybe Iโ€™ll try that someday as well ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป

Youโ€™ll find them here if youโ€™re interested:

But anyway now I have a good HP iPaq 214 that runs WM6 all 3 parts of Pocket EverQuest ๐Ÿ™Œ

Because strange fact - my older Compaq iPaqs can run PocketEQ 3, but not 1 and 2 ๐Ÿคฏ.

And also I managed to replace a worn out supercapacitor on my latest HP iPaq 214.

On my first attempt I totally failed the job because time keeping when the battery removed did not appear and also I disturbed a few neighboring components.

So on a second attempt I came with 300ยบC hot air and solder paste and the cap exploded in my face ๐Ÿ˜‚.

And it's really weird, cause at first I got a "Descriptor reading error" upon connecting any of the H3800s to the laptop and both got listed as "Unknown device". I found and installed a driver so now Windows 11 properly detects them, but I can't install ActiveSync on Windows 11 ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ

So I need to forward those devices over USB to a Windows XP on a Virtual Box. And whenever I try that - virtual machine just stops responding completely ๐Ÿ˜”

Had to look for alternative methods of data transfer since I canโ€™t connect any of the two iPaq H3800 series Pocket PCs own to even this rather old Windows 8 era Asus laptop running Windows 11 and Windows XP on a VirtualBox. At the same time it works perfectly with H3970 and I can't really figure out why.

I'm coming up on infra-red
There is no running that can hide you
'Cause I can see in the dark
I'm coming up on infra-red
Forget your running, I will find you

Seriously though - when was the last time youโ€™ve sent anything over IrDA? I just did yesterday but before that it was probably around 2002-2003 ๐Ÿคฃ

P.S.: check out the white balance, brightness and quality difference between H3850 and H3970 screens - pretty much same era devices๐Ÿ˜ฎ

While I'am still on the last day of my and while things are charging to be used later - it's always a nice idea to play some Pocket EverQuest on a Compaq iPaq H3970 I restored earlier ๐Ÿ˜Ž

P.S.: love their sense of humour ๐Ÿ˜‚. And I lso discovered a whole new mission in a mine I never found before for so many years ๐Ÿคฉ

The ARM emulator, when it was in beta (MS BetaPlace), it includes special ARMv4 images for Windows Mobile 2003 SE. That one is hard to find, but I'll upload it very soon.

As of now, I'm working on a collection and I need (older) ROMs. So if you have a WM device lying around (like iPAQs), contact me if you have a backup ROM. Preferably ARM-based iPAQs due to it's StrongARM models currently not emulated.

Folder information for the WM archive as of March 6. 8GB of various images for many versions.

So I had to open the device and connect it directly to the bench power supply set up at 5V 2A for like 5-10 minutes. After that I plugged it back into the device and it got immediately recognized ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป.

Hope that helps many other retro gadget enthusiasts out there ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป

But there are a few more important things:

1) if your new battery is 4mm - try to put a battery management system PCB next to the battery and not on top of it to make the whole construction as thin as possible

2) battery terminals are way to flimsy and easy to break, but can be soldered no problem with a good flux

3) probably the most important: at first my new battery didnt want to charge and was not really recognized by the device:

So I just carefully desoldered an old battery from a BMS board and then soldered a new one instead.

And the device successfully booted with a new battery ๐Ÿ•บ
