Some high school kids are being taught olla farming, a self-watering old agricultural practice, developed in southwestern Ontario by the descendants of escaped Black slaves and Indigenous people. Instructional videos are available YouTube. thestar.com/news/gather-round-

I blogged about automating the irrigation in our garden. Still very much a work in progress, but at least one step further.

Water Wise - Maker's Asylum

#WaterWise is a smart #irrigation device that automates the process of #watering household #plants by continuously monitoring soil moisture levels. It uses a microcontroller (#ESP8266), a soil moisture sensor, and a water pump system. Users can choose between automatic operation based on sensor thresholds or manually trigger watering through a connected web interface or app, regardless of their physical location.

Water Flowing to Rice Fields in Japan - After Opening the Gate đŸŒŸđŸš° #Japan #Irrigation #Nature - YouTube

> Watch the rush of water as it begins its journey to nourish Japanese rice fields. It all starts with the opening of a small gate.
> You may notice wheat still growing in the fields—this is because many farmers grow wheat in winter and harvest it just before the rice season begins.

Australia’s Limestone Coast is drying up

"The once crystal-clear lake now often appears steel-grey or green, its water quality compromised by persistent algae blooms caused by excess nutrients in the water from agricultural runoff and wastewater. Waste from the lake’s thousands of visitors also built up, with some guests reporting seeing human faeces littering its perimeter before a portable toilet was installed in January."

“If we don’t do something about it in the next few years, it rests upon our soul. We really should have spoken up and influenced some people to care for it a bit better rather than just take, take, take.”

"A 3% improvement in water-use productivity for agriculture produces the same yield as 3 million acre-feet of flood irrigation. In other words: more crop per drop. The focus should shift from expanding irrigation infrastructure to using existing water more efficiently."

"Floods and climate-induced disasters do not only cause material losses. They also rob us of our culture."

The company can pound sand! If you update your mobile app to their v2.0 it will reflash your rainbird wifi module and not allow local access, forcing you to use their cloud-based BS. I'm done with them. Going the open-source route here and using the drop-in replacement opensprinkler.com/ . Works out of the box with Home Assistant too.

If I wanted to integrate some ground humidity sensors and a drip system (plus precipitation forecast data) into for my vegetable garden, which irrigation computer would I buy? Yardian? Rain Bird? Something else?

(Must use a Local Polling or Local Push integration. Boosts and comments appreciated.)

Wildlife-unfriendly suburbia
The 70-kilometre-long agricultural irrigation channel is a wildlife graveyard.

"Birds, kangaroos, wallabies, possums, you name it. Various animals [are] getting trapped in the channel... More and more native animals are being hit on our roads...It's because our areas are growing and our government hasn't considered how we can build the infrastructure that we need while also considering the needs of native animals and how we can protect them."
