Ambroggio Lorenzetti. Allegory of Bad Government
Very prophetic, I'd say. Very Elonian. Very Putinian. Very Trumpian.

"Bust of a Young Woman," Plautilla Nelli, mid-1500s

Sister Plautilla Nelli (1524-1588) was a nun and artist who is the first known female artist of the Renaissance. Born to a wealthy Florentine family, she joined the convent at the age of fourteen. It's unknown if she had a sincere vocation, or if it was a case of her family putting her there to avoid having to raise a dowry.

Her convent, Santa Caterina di Cafaggio, became a sort of center for nun-artists, turning it into almost a factory of devotional art. Despite limiting herself to religious works and portraits, she was a daring artist in many ways, doing large-scale works and even a version of "The Last Supper" that some place on a level with da Vinci's.

Neglected for a long time, aside from being noted in assorted art histories, her work is now being rediscovered and restored, with some long-lost works being unearthed and studied.

I do kind of like the idea of a self-supporting colony of female artists, unmolested by domestic duties and free to create....

From the Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence.

A Renaissance-era drawing (chalk on paper) of a young woman, seen from the chest up. She is smiling and looking down to our left, and is somewhat reminiscent of the Mona Lisa.

"Interior with Three Figures in a Cafe," Erma Bossi, c. 1910.

Bossi (1875-1952) was Italian-born but her style was German Expressionism, with some influence, I think, from the Nabis.

There's not much biographical info about her, other than how she learned art in Munich, fled to Paris at the outbreak of WWI, and then returned to Milan but continued to exhibit with the avant-garde artists in Paris. She was one of the few women to participate in the Venice Biennales in 1930 and 1935.

I like how the figures communicate through posture, given that they have no faces, and the patches of color and pattern remind me very much of Vuillard, whose work is so dear to me.

From the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus, Munich.

An Expressionist scene, with influence from the Nabi school. In a cafe, the eye is drawn first to a row of lights that cross the canvas diagonally. In the lower right corner, two women are seated in close conversation in a banquette, evidently sharing something private. In the background, a waiter in a white apron looks on, as if wondering if they need refills. None of the figures have facial features; all is communicated through posture. There are other chairs and tables, all empty, an orange wallpaper, and green curtains.
