I often say I'm "bad at hobbies/fandoms", but that's shorthand for my actual pattern:

1. Get excited about something
2. Learn a bunch of stuff about it, including some of the technical details, history, or esoterica...
3. ...enough to make some people think I must have obsessive knowledge & experience; even some people in that world will think this until we talk for 2 minutes
4. For the next 1-20 years surf the edges of the thing, diving in a little or a lot when random interest grabs me or I see a reference in social media or IRL

It's pretty much a "jack of all trades" kind of thing. Shallow(ish) learning/involvement, but deep enough for me to enjoy things and satisfy my personal preferences for bouncing back and forth between shiny, new things and comforting, familiar, satisfying things.

I have never seen the space and the last time I spoke to an engineer we had to troubleshoot an issue while they had on full safety equipment and respiratory gear!
