Things the Golden Records (#Voyager) don´t show - or how I transmitted a sanitation truck into space long before ESAs Blue Danube Waltz

Golden Record / image No. 117

When I was an Artist-in-Science at the European Space Agency - ESA / ESOC in #Darmstadt in 2022 I mainly focussed on our waste culture and how we brought this culture into space (#orbitaldebris). At the same time, I also looked at how we have been turning a blind eye to the waste we produce for decades and continue to do so today. I found it extremely revealing to see that back in 1977, when #NASA made a selection of images to supply the data collection stored on the #GoldenRecords which were designed to inform possible #extraterrestials about the existence of the earth and its inhabitants, the images described many aspects of human existence, but left the reality of our modern life, such as the production of waste in large parts unnoticed.

Which is why I decided to change that and send an extra image into space to be understood as addition to the collection of the 116 diagrams and pictures generated by NASA in 1977 : On October 20th, 2022 the image of a sanitation truck (#JamaicaBay, #NY) from the year 1973 was uplinked through the tracking network of European Space Agency (#ESA) in the direction where the “Golden Records” attached to the NASA Voyager space probes are currently traveling in interstellar space.

We will now see what the extraterrestials will make of it. A sanitation truck floating through space to the beat of the Blue Danube Waltz.

We see a coloured photograph of a sanitation truck unloading waste on a landfill. The picture was taken in 1973 in Jamaica Bay, New York.We see a grey display cabinet integrated into a wall. The wings of the cabinet are wide open. There is only a picture frame on a shelf in the otherwise empty cabinet. The frame shows a photo of a sanitation truck unloading waste at a landfill site.We see the corner of a room in which a grey display cabinet is built into the wall. Both hinged doors are wide open. There is only one picture frame in the cabinet. To the left of the cabinet hangs a light box with a picture of a comic book superheroine and to the right of the cabinet is a purple-coloured wooden panel that has been mounted on the wall. There are yellow numbers and letters on the wall. The floor of the room is covered with parquet and there is a window between the light box and the display cabinet.

A tree swallow (Tachycineta bicolor) in Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. Note the visible brood patch in the center of his chest. In preparation for incubating eggs birds will sometimes pluck some of their feathers so they can better transmit their body heat to their eggs.

A house wren (Troglodytes aedon) hunting in Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in late May. These make their nests in holes, like those left in trees by woodpecker nests. They breed in the northern half of the US, and winter in Mexico. They're also present in Central and South America year round.

This is a zabulon skipper (Lon zabulon) at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in late May. There haven't been as many butterflies this year in New York.

I think this is a tern with its head stuck in some algae after a dive. It was able to free itself. This was taken in late May at the East Pond of Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge.

This is a common snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina). They are the state reptile of New York, and this one was chomping through reeds. It was about the size of a large pizza.

An eastern wood pewee (Contopus virens) in Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in late May. These breed in the eastern part of the continental US. They hunt flies by flying out and grabbing them out of the air, then returning to the same spot.

A ruddy turnstone (Arenaria interpres) on a rock in the water at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in late May. As the name implies, they hunt by turning over small stones on the shore. Their non-breeding territory are coastal areas all over the world, and they breed along the coast in the arctic.

A semipalmated plover (Charadrius semipalmatus) in late May. These winter all over the US and southern Canada, and breed in Alaska and Northern Canada. Like many other plovers they rely on beaches and other shore areas to feed and make new plovers.

A yellow warbler (Setophaga petechia) checking me out in Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge (late May). These are small, greenish-gold birds with red stripes on their breast. Looks a bit too tropical for NYC? They winter Central America and the Caribbean, and migrate to the northern half of North America to breed (pretty much all the way up to the arctic circle.

A backlit photo of a brown thrasher (Toxostoma rufum) in Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. These are relatively common, but very shy birds. I often seen 6-10 of them on trips to JBWR, but they usually fly into the bushes as soon as they can see a human.
