‘We Are All Shocked’: Warming Waters Bring a to Spain’s Coasts

!!!
"While most sea slugs live on the seabed, the blue dragon floats on top of the water, trapping air in its stomach to float… It also has a rare superpower: It can feed on jellyfish and siphonophores, including the venomous Portuguese -of-war, & incorporate the cells of the into the tips of its fingerlike appendages and fire them at predators or prey."

Things are going swimmingly? Well. Maybe not in the US. It’s Friday morning so I remembered that “oh, today is Friday, I wonder what dreadful news will come out late in the day”. Maybe others who do find it necessary to check in with “the news” know what I mean. Anyway, here’s a photo of jellies seen at the Odyssey Aquarium for Drew’s birthday outing.

iPhone photo in dark aquarium with brightly-lit mature jellyfish showing in dark, vivid blue water. There are 2 centered, large Medusa type with trailing tendrils and light ruffled long. “gowns”. Far left are others that look smaller because of the distance apart.

Luminescent jellies

A close-up photo of a pair of jelly slippers that someone placed on their stoop to give away. They appear lit from behind by a walkway light, illuminating them with a magical glow, which brings out their yellow-pink coloring.

Four jellies (formerly called "jellyfish") in a large blue-lighted aquarium. The jellies have "caps" of white-pink with orange striping. One cap is mostly orange wrth white-pink broad stripes. Extending from the caps are extremely frilly white tentacles and orange strands. Strands and tentacles are two to three feet long (about one meter) and curve as the jellies float in the water.

By-the-wind sailors, Latin name Velella velellas, spotted out on Monterey Bay but thousands of these are blowing onto Bay Area beaches now. They're related to jellies but not actually jellies. #NaturePhotography #Jellies #PacificOcean #Monterey #California

Velella velellas aka by-the-wind sailors, a jellyfish-like organism with a little sail that blows it across the surface of the ocean. They're found singly and in clumps of dozens to thousands.Velella velellas aka by-the-wind sailors, a jellyfish-like organism with a little sail that blows it across the surface of the ocean. White-spotted jellyfish (Phyllorhiza puntata)
Day 19 of #invertober #invertober2023
White-spotted jellies have a voracious appetite and consume the larvae and eggs of fishes and crustaceans. This not only impacts an ecosystem’s reproductive capacity; it also reduces the food available to other species, as a single jelly can filter up to 13,200 gallons of water a day. Native to the western Pacific, scientists are concerned that the ecosystems where P. punctata has been introduced are simply not equipped to withstand the species’ numbers.
