The Importance Of Creating Core Memories For Children

So this is (was) Shauna. She was brought into the practice a couple of decades or so ago, having been dumped on the local coast path with her ear tags removed (these would have identified the farm) and a badly broken hind leg. We pinned the leg and I brought her home to recuperate.

She lived in the house with us, sleeping in a pen, and roamed the garden by day in this extremely natty red jumper. She ate her own bodyweight in poisonous plants and decorated the wall behind her pen with the aftermath*, and every evening my daughter - who was already at school at the time - and her friends excitedly 'herded' her inside and put her to bed.

Once she'd recovered to the point we knew she was going to be ok (this took a few weeks), we gave her to a friendly smallholder and she lived out her days.

My daughter remembers none of this. None. Even the photos (which I've just found on an old hard drive) do nothing to trigger the memory. We have a saying in the family, for when someone has forgotten a major event: "Her name was Shauna. She was a sheep. She had a red jumper", delivered as a flat-toned mantra.

Kids.

(*: no amount of scrubbing would completely remove it. When we moved, eight coats of stain-stop and three coats of emulsion seemed to do the trick.)

Just going through some old photos on a rainy day.

This amazing scenery is from just outside Tafraoute, the main town in the Anti-Atlas mountain region of Morocco. This is a particular mecca for climbers and also home to the Painted Rocks, a sprawling mass of boulders in the desert painted by a bonkers Belgian climber in the early 80s.

These have become tourist attractions in their own right, and most have been repainted since by locals. Climbing is fine with the locals, and several routes have been bolt-protected there and bouldering is popular - although the paint reduces the friction of the rock to zero, which keeps traffic on the climbs to a minimum.

This was a fantastic day in which we all cycled out and climbed one of the classic routes, during a road trip round Morocco in about 2013.

The youngest was six!

An incredibly epic picture of a heroic rock climber climbing a vertical crack in a very large blue-painted rock. I am claiming to be the climber, although only my orange T shirt and stubby legs are visible. The picture was taken by my daughter from the ground, and she has helpfully tilted the camera so that the angle of the rock appears much steeper.

Conclusion: I am not that heroic.

View from the back door, as I sit wading through A level physics with an offspring.

Very little flower activity - the chickens have long since eaten most of the bulbs and destroy small seedlings - but the recent rain has brought the foliage plants on a treat. Once these bush out, wildflowers get a bit of protection, particularly the poppies, and start poking through.

I'm happy with the textures, though.

At the lower right of the picture is the edge of a brick patio, with a circular boundary. Top left and far right are glimpses of sheds. The rest of the picture is taken up by plants.

As in the text, there isn't a huge variety of colour - there are some white ox-eye daisies in the foreground and a few red poppies - but the foliage is pleasing. There's a brown physocarpus in the middle ground, and some alchemilla mollis to the right of it. A young echium is plonked in the middle of the foreground also.

The same area as the previous photo, but taken from a different angle (from rightwards of where the last one was snapped), giving a view more diagonally down the garden. More of one of the sheds is visible, with a flattish green roof and a fascia made of individual leaf-shapes cut out of 4"X1" pieces of timber, and an arch made of branches in front of it.

A Friday night romp with friends sounds like a treat. Come say hello as we use a little levity to get above all the gravity of the real world.
