NEW from my lab in Ecology Letters: Machine learning trained on >10k iNaturalist records let us "hindcast" Joshua trees' flowering back over the 20th Century. The hindcast recovers flowering events recorded in field notes, herbarium records, and newspaper archives. Joshua trees now flower a bit more often than they once didβ but that's probably not good for the trees overall

Spent a very nice if quite hot couple of days in the desert, inventorying Joshua trees with summer research students
and one for the nature folks ^_^ I can't use this for the daily thing as it's a couple years old, but something from when I was still in SoCal (I don't *think* I've shared here before?), not properly in Joshua Tree State Park, but kind of in the vicinity, in Saddle Butte, they really do seem like an alien landscape!
