#Musk 1st announced his intention to build #space-based #internet, which he would eventually call #Starlink, in 2015. He had plans to settle #Mars, …the moons of #Jupiter, & maybe #asteroids too. All those space colonies would have to be connected via #satellite-based communication; Starlink itself might…be adapted for this use. Indeed, Starlink’s terms…ask customers to affirm they “recognize Mars as a free planet & that no Earth-based govt has authority or sovereignty over Martian activities.”

Jupiter’s giant storm has been spinning for centuries—and it’s big enough to swallow THREE Earths! Mind blown?

A digital space poster of Jupiter showing the swirling Great Red Spot storm. Text reads: “Jupiter’s Great Red Spot — it’s a storm so big, three Earths could fit inside it, and it’s been raging for centuries!

New data from #NASA ’s Juno mission shows winds beneath #Jupiter and Io surfaces

New data from NASA's Juno miss...

@StarWalk What do you see in this image? 👀 If you spot a face, you're experiencing pareidolia — a brain trick that makes us see familiar shapes, like faces, in random patterns. Jupiter's swirling clouds are perfect for this illusion! ☁️🔭 #Jupiter #Pareidolia #SpaceIllusions #AstronomyFun #StarWalk

Another family portrait of Jupiter and its Galilean Moons.

Despite the lack of details, looking at those four little dots appearing and disappearing while they are dancing around the planet, is a nice experience: definitely one of my favourite views of our Solar System.

Needless to say, also Jupiter’s atmosphere is always charming, even in black and white colors.

After a long time I got a nice view of the Great Red Spot and the cloud structures around it. It has been an opportunity to acquire a “large” amount of frames in a short time: 25000 frames in about 2 minutes, avoiding the use of WinJupos to derotate the image. Generally speaking about the final image I’m aware it’s not a perfect result, but still decent.

is still brighter than all stars...

Holly smoke ‼️ (as some say) I've been living so long in big cities and near big cities, that I didn't know that

Then there is the pollution in the sky, might effect that, but mostly I guess, I just didn't look up

Really only see like a _few_ stars here in Osaka, now I can add a planet

Although not as bright as , is still brighter than all stars. So like Venus it does become visible before them when dusk falls.

Here are some pictures I took a few months ago when Venus was on the dusk side, near a waxing crescent . See how bright it is!

Venus near a waxing crescent moon (with earthshine) in Paris on 2025 January 3 at 18:10. One month later, Venus near a waxing crescent moon with earthshine in Paris on 2025 February 1 at 18:40. Another month later… Venus near a waxing crescent moon with earthshine again, in Paris on 2025 March 1 at 19:24.

RE
that must be not Venus. is currently visible at dawn, not at dusk

Yea, seems this needs more thinking😅

Well, the text info (see images) says, (white) Vinus is brighter than (yellow) Jupiter, but there is these days

And the time IS a factor, but near a big city, I could not see another object, just the moon, _not_ counting the angle in your map image, I think the super brightness means, imo, Venus

How can I differentiate between Jupiter and Venus in the sky?

Asked 1 year, 10 months ago

Venus and Jupiter both appear to be of similar brightness in the sky, although, Venus appears to be slightly brighter than Jupiter. Sometimes when only one of them is in the sky, it is difficult to tell if it is Venus or Jupiter. Is there any way I could tell with certainty which planet is it? irrespective of the month of the year or location.

Obviously, I know about sky map related apps. However, spotting a planet with naked eye is more fun.2 Answers

This is "just" a matter of when and where.

A planet in the south at midnight - That's Jupiter.

A planet in the West shortly after sunset in the summer of 2023 - Venus.

There's no short cut here. You use your app or your almanac to determine when and where a planet will be and then you go to the sky and see it.

Now you'll get a sense, after a while, of the pattern in Jupiter's and Venus's motion. Jupiter moves slowly relative to the stars, so after a year and a month it is back to about the same position in the sky.

Venus moves from being an evening star to a morning star and then back again. It is never opposite the sun.

This might be called "skycraft". Learn your way around the sky and you'll come to learn when and where to expect to see a planet.

If you have a telescope, Jupiter is easily distinguished by its moons and its bands. Whereas Venus often has a clear crescent or gibbous shape, And, of course Venus is actually considerably brighter than Jupiter, so if they are side-by-side there would be no doubt which is which.
