Poetry: Communication vs. emotion

Depends on the poetry. There are a couple of poetic styles that are about communication. They are used in cultures other than ours though. Ones that tolorate ambiguity and value "sophisitcation."

The following is an edited clip from a scene set in the 10th century Japanese Emperial court. It uses katauta a three line varity of waka designed for "sophisticated" communication.

Empress speaks asking why the characters have bee brought to her.

          What is here,
          Rabbit, pheasant,
          The coop forsaken?

Seer explains why

          Bound by fate,
          Sakura royal frog.
          Sea beyond the well.

Empress reprimands other seer for bad advice about not seeing the characters.

          Lotus Crow,
          Croaked of dangers.
          Now Sakura revealed.

Other seer offers his excuse

          Inauspicious,
          Was sakura then.
          Now fruit ripen.

Empress warns that she is displeased and the the seer risks punishment.

          Foolish crow
          Flying near the sun.
          Beware the scorching.

Wary kitsune
Dances in the dusk
Far from shadow plain

This is the shortest I have done resently. It was part of katauta exchange between two characters the first a kitsune.

Katauta is a type of waka japanese poetry. Each preson composes a three line 5-7-7 morae verse to talk to each other. I rather like the my character's response.
