Al-Haitham watched as the door clicked shut after Panah’s retreating figure. Then he turned back towards his desk, his bright gaze settling over the parcel once more. There it sat, looming at the edge of his desk like an ominous plot device; he couldn’t help but wonder if its curious contents would be even worth half the trouble, and the possibility it may unleash yet another unknown and iniquitous terror upon the world.

A tattered curtain, pushed to one side, dangles from a rotted frame before him. In the facsimile of a hospital room long ago relinquished to the Great Red Sand, he is an anomaly. The Doctor is another. He smiles beneath his mask, the effect strange and avian. “He is not here as a mad scholar but rather as a… personal patient of mine.”
