@metaning The captions are bilingual: Japanese/English. All other text is in Japanese only. But that's not too bad, as the book is more of a collection of 's prints and doesn't contain extended background information.

"The Pond at Benten Shrine in Shiba," Hasui Kawase, 1929.

I like Kawase. This is from earlier in his career, when he didn't have to gloss over the damage caused by WWII. The image is deceptively simple; two women surrounded by lotus plants. But this is a woodblock print...image carving all of that! Kawase was amazing.

From the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA.

A Japanese woodblock print from 1929. While the title says it depicts a pond, no water is visible. Two women in traditional Japanese outfits of kimonos with broad sashes tied at the back stand on a wooden bridge or boardwalk. They are surrounded by a riot of lotus plants with broad fanlike green leaves and pink-and-white blooms. Obviously the pond is full of them! In the background are trees in full leaf. The bridge, the figures, and the lotus blossoms are the only things that aren't green here.
