KDE Plasma 6.3.5 Update Available to Kubuntu Users

If you’re running Kubuntu 25.04 and want the latest fixes the KDE Plasma 6.3.5 release, you can use the Kubuntu backports PPA to get ’em. KDE Plasma 6.3.5 popped out a few weeks back, serving as the fifth and (likely) final bug-fix release prior to the next major release, KDE Plasma 6.4. Over the weekend, Kubuntu developers announced that the Kubuntu backports PPA has added the requisite packages for Kubuntu 25.04. Thus, Kubuntu users can add (or enable) the PPA to get the update now, rather than wait for the update to filter out through the usual software channels. The :sys_more_orange:

KDE Plasma 6.4 Gets UI Overhauls

KDE Plasma 6.4 has recently entered a soft freeze stage in preparation for the release, so this means that there will be no more new features being added. Furthermore, more bug fixes and UI refinements will be made during the rest of the development cycle until the final release. However, there may be new features that have been in development in months and are almost ready.

KDE Plasma 6.4 now gives you a beautified new folder dialog that provides you options to customize the folder’s appearance, alongside the folder name, such as the folder icon. You can make your folder visually expressing to make them easier to distinguish from other folders.

For the new file dialog, it has become more gorgeous by adding an icon for visual representation of what you’re going to create. This makes tasks easier for you.

You can now identify the media being played in some applications that provide this metadata to the KDE Plasna desktop. Any application that does this will be given a name and a media currently playing in the audio volume panel widget. This will streamline the identification of which application is playing which media, especially when it comes to web browsers.

Additionally, when you’re transferring files, sleep is now inhibited to prevent transfer interruptions during the long session. This ensures that you save time from having to retry the transfer, should any problems occur.

For those who are using Ubuntu, the upcoming Ubuntu version, which is 25.10 Questing Quokka, will provide this version of KDE, which will be released on June 17th, 2025.

You can see more changes here.

KDE Plasma 6.4 improves drag-and-drop for files

As we are getting closer to the soft freeze for the next version of KDE Plasma, which is v6.4, more features are being added to the desktop environment which is slated to be released this June. This release is going to be the most exciting version, hence the fact that there was an 18-year-old feature request (December 29th, 2007) posted on the bug tracker since the KDE 3 days.

Starting from this version of KDE Plasma, you can now configure the desktop environment via the Settings application so that you can now drag and drop files to a different folder on the same disk without asking every time. This saves time and effort, and this feature is demonstrated here.

To enable this setting, open the KDE settings, navigate to Workspace > General Behavior, scroll to Drag and Drop, and press on Move if on the same device.

Besides this one, there are various highlights that you can see in the blog article linked above, which coincides with how this version makes your user experience better, such as the following:

  • KWin’s full-screen zoom feature with a three-finger pinch gesture,
  • GPU usage monitoring in the System Monitor for AMD and Intel GPUs, and
  • Raw sensor data information in the Info Center.

For gamers, various improvements to the game controller joystick support have been added to this version of KDE Plasma.

@hisold Absolutely agree with you. I still can't find what i want, when i want, like i could [eventually] in P5.

However, coz ofc everyone's own preferences re layout will differ, i would love them to redesign it so that users can "build their own" by hiding unneeded sections, & rearranging by d&d their important ones to the top.

I run Arch, btw.

Of course, you can't tell, it's just a KDE Plasma 6 desktop set up the way I like.

So far the only thing that's given me trouble has been Steam (resolved by using the Flatpak version), although I still don't have everything set up and configured, and I haven't tried a whole bunch of stuff yet. I'll probably write a blog post.

A screen shot of my desktop, showing KDE Plasma 6. Along the left side of the screen is a panel with my application icons. Top-right is the a status tray thing showing app notifications and system status stuff. Along the right side of the screen are widgets showing an analog clock, CPU usage, network speed, RAM/storage usage, and the local weather forecast.

Is there a bug in KDE Plasma 6.3.1 that prevents the creation of icons (not shortcuts)? Previously, for example, you could drag a program icon from /usr/share/applications/ onto the desktop and choose whether to create an icon or a shortcut. Now the option to create an icon is missing. Does anyone know anything about this?

KDE Plasma 6.3 Released, This is What’s New

A new version of KDE Plasma is out and, as you’d expect, the update is packed with new features, user experience enhancements, and performance tweaks. KDE Plasma 6.3 is the fourth big update in the KDE Plasma 6.x series and it marks the one-year anniversary of the KDE Plasma 6.0 debut, as KDE notes in its 6.3 announcement: One year on, with the teething problems a major new release inevitably brings firmly behind us, Plasma’s developers have worked on fine-tuning, squashing bugs and adding features to Plasma 6 — turning it into the best desktop environment for everyone!” KDE As :sys_more_orange:
