Clerks III (2022)

Clerks III’s title sequence felt like the most exhilarating five minutes of cinema I’ve seen in a long time. As it turns out, that was just a massive rush of nostalgia — an unsustainable high that’s only rivaled by the abysmally downer ending. Watching this film is the equivalent of jumping out of a plane without a parachute.

It’s telling that even at its best, Clerks III is never quite good enough. Making the original Clerks was the best idea writer-director Kevin Smith ever had. But with each sequel, each retread, each return to the same dried-up well, it’s become painfully clear that Clerks might be the only idea he ever had — a notion this third installment confirms from conception through execution.

Clerks didn’t become a cult hit for nothing, and Clerks III’s recreation of both iconic scenes and legendary behind-the-scenes moments is nothing short of eerie — and I mean that in a good way. But the feeling of déjà vu fades quickly, giving way to a sense of “been there, done that.” We’ve seen these shots before. We’ve heard the stories. We know all this shit by heart. And viewers for whom any of this is new would be better off just watching the original.

In addition to the recycled material, there’s plenty of random filler. Take the casting montage, where the protagonists hold auditions for roles in Randal Graves’s movie-within-the-movie. It serves no purpose beyond fulfilling Smith’s quota of buddy cameos. That made sense when he cast friends who were as unknown as he was. But now? What’s the point of Danny Trejo showing up when he’s already in everything? Even Ben Affleck feels less like a surprise than a contractual obligation.

This detour becomes a dead end when Randal announces that everyone — himself included — will just play themselves anyway. And that choice brings the age problem into full view: for these characters, the only thing worse than acting their age (which they mostly don’t) is looking their age.

Since the film-within-the-film turns out to be a shot-for-shot remake of Clerks, it’s hard to understand how Randal could’ve convinced himself it was his story instead of Dante’s. Sure, it’s implied he edits it in a way that makes Dante the protagonist, but from the look of every scene he shoots, that was always the case.

The inclusion of scenes from Clerks II — meaning the fictional script somehow spans the decade between the original and the first sequel — is counterintuitive at best and contrived at worst. (It’s little consolation that these throwaway moments contain the film’s finest acting, courtesy of Brian O’Halloran).

All of that and more leads to a punchline for a 28-year-old joke that no one but Smith ever really got. The ending has no value beyond shock — and even that is cheapened by weak writing. Any potential emotional payoff is undercut by a lack of narrative setup.

If Smith had bothered to build a plot that earned the finale, rather than just meandering until it was time to roll credits, he might’ve pulled it off. As it stands, it just feels like — for reasons known only to him — Smith always had it in for poor Dante.

I've heard the 'main' Kevin Smith stories so many times, I think this maybe round 4-5 of the George Carlin casting tale...

...but I genuinely love his delivery & punchline every time. 😂

Dogma is still, so so great. Was a lot of fun to watch it on the big screen, and with a decent number of folks in the theater too. So happy Kevin Smith is getting to tour this around

Kevin Smith's Dogma has been restored in 4K and has been re-released in theaters for its 25th anniversary. It's mostly aged very well and if it isn't Kevin Smith's best film then it's certainly his best written. #Dogma #KevinSmith #movies #4K #moviereview
