The Dogma tour 30min Q&A... recorded! šŸ˜‚

Clerks III (2022)

Clerk IIIā€˜s title sequence felt like the most exhilarating five minutes of cinema I’ve seen all year. As it turns out, that was just a massive rush of nostalgia kicking in, an unsustainable high that is only rivaled by the abysmally downer ending. Basically, watching this film is the equivalent of jumping off a plane without a parachute.

It’s telling that, even at its best, Clerks III is never good enough. Making the original film was the best idea writer/director Kevin Smith ever had, but with each sequel, each retread, each going back to the same old well, each dusting off of characters that should have been retired for good a long time ago, it has become painfully clear that Clerks may arguably be the only idea he’s ever had — a notion that this third installment’s premise does nothing but confirm, from its conception all the way to its execution.

Clerks didn’t become a cult hit for nothing, and Clerk III’s recreation of both iconic scenes and legendary behind-the-scenes stuff is nothing short of eerie, and I mean that in a good way.

However, it doesn’t take long for the feeling of deja vu to subside and make room for a sense of ā€˜been there, done that;’ we have seen all these shots before, we have already heard all the stories surrounding them, we know all this shit by heart, and viewers to whom any of this is new would be better served watching the original film.

In addition to the recycled material, there’s a lot of random filler to be found here. There’s a casting montage wherein the protagonists hold auditions for the roles in Randal Graves’s movie-withing-the-movie; this achieves absolutely nothing other than fulfill Smith’s quota of friends’ cameos (it made sense when he cast buddies who were as unknown as he used to be; here, though, what’s the point of a Danny Trejo appearance when the dude’s been in way too many movies as it is? Even Ben Affleck feels more like a requisite than a pleasant surprise).

This detour quickly becomes a dead end when Randal decides that everyone including himself will be playing themselves anyway, which in turn pushes all the way to the foreground the age issue: for this particular set of characters, the only thing worse than acting their age (which they mostly don’t) is looking their age.

Since the film-within-the-film appears to be a shot-for-shot remake of Clerks (how Randal could have possibly believed that he was making a movie about himself as opposed to Dante’s life story, I haven’t the foggiest. Sure, it’s sort of implied that he edits it such a way that Dante would be the hero, but on the evidence of pretty much every scene he shot before that, that was obviously always going to be the case), the inclusion of events from Clerks II (meaning that the fictional script presumably covered the 10-year span between the original and the first sequel) is counterintuitive at best and contrived at worst (it’s little consolation that these throwaway scenes feature the finest bits of acting in the entire film, by Brian O’Halloran as Dante).

All of that and more amounts to nothing but the set-up to a punch line to a 28-year-old joke that no one but Smith ever really got. The conclusion has no value apart from that of shock because it feels tacked-on, any potential emotional payoff that the audience could have derived from it denied by weak scriptwriting.

If Smith had bothered to come up with a plot that actually led up to the finale, instead of just whiling away until it was time to wrap it all up, he might just have gotten away with murder; as it is, though, it just gives the impression that for some reason the filmmaker always had it in for poor Dante.

I've heard the 'main' Kevin Smith stories so many times, I think this maybe round 4-5 of the George Carlin casting tale...

...but I genuinely love his delivery & punchline every time. šŸ˜‚

Dogma is still, so so great. Was a lot of fun to watch it on the big screen, and with a decent number of folks in the theater too. So happy Kevin Smith is getting to tour this around

Kevin Smith's Dogma has been restored in 4K and has been re-released in theaters for its 25th anniversary. It's mostly aged very well and if it isn't Kevin Smith's best film then it's certainly his best written. #Dogma #KevinSmith #movies #4K #moviereview
