Bella Ciao to relocate Swansea restaurant to former Madeira site on The Kingsway

The family-run business, which opened its second restaurant on Castle Street nearly two years ago, will move into the former Madeira Restaurante premises at 46 The Kingsway. The new venue is set to open on Monday 2 December, offering a larger space for diners.

Move follows closure of long-standing Portuguese restaurant

The relocation follows the closure of Madeira Restaurante earlier this year, a venue that had served Portuguese cuisine on The Kingsway for more than two decades. Bella Ciao will now take over the site, bringing its Italian menu to the heart of the city centre.

The restaurant confirmed the move in a social media post, saying:

“Some of you may already be aware that we are relocating our Castle Street restaurant… I can now confirm we will be opening in the former Madeira Restaurante Swansea on the 2nd of December.”

Customers with existing bookings will be contacted directly, and the team says the Port Talbot branch remains open as usual.

Family-run restaurant with a passion for Italian cuisine

Bella Ciao is run by Giovan, Tyrone, Domina and Jessica, alongside a team of chefs and waiters. The restaurant describes its approach as a “culinary adventure through the flavours and traditions of Italy,” offering a menu of pasta, pizza, meat and seafood dishes.

New city centre courtyard to honour late council officer Huw Mowbray

Tribute in the heart of the city

According to the council, construction of Mowbray Yard will start this month after the appointment of Horan Construction Ltd as the main contractor. The courtyard, which the council says will feature trees, planting and new street furniture, is intended to provide a calm and welcoming space between The Kingsway and Oxford Street.

Council Leader Rob Stewart said:

“We’re delighted to confirm the appointment of a contractor to deliver Mowbray Yard – a beautiful new courtyard that will stand as a lasting tribute to Huw. His dedication, energy and vision helped shape many of Swansea’s most significant regeneration projects in recent years, so it’s only fitting that this space bears his name.”

A career that transformed Swansea

The council notes that Mr Mowbray, who died in 2023 aged 59, was a father of two and a long‑serving officer. Officials say he played a central role in delivering landmark schemes including the Swansea.com Stadium, Swansea Arena and the revamp of Wind Street.

Part of wider regeneration

Swansea Council says Mowbray Yard is due for completion in spring 2026. The courtyard will sit behind the new 71/72 Kingsway office development, which the authority describes as a key part of the city centre regeneration programme and part‑funded by the Swansea Bay City Deal.

The council says 80% of the office space at 71/72 Kingsway is now let, with hundreds of staff from companies including TUI and Futures First already moved in. Officials add that further tenants will be announced in the coming weeks.

New route announced for Swansea Christmas Parade

The parade begins at 5pm at the Guildhall, where Santa will illuminate the building with a red glow before a fireworks display signals the start of the evening.

Parade route through the city

From the Guildhall, the parade will travel down St Helen’s Road, along the Kingsway, College Street, Castle Street and Caer Street, before finishing on Princess Way.

More than 40 community groups, colourful floats and beloved characters from fairytales and comic books – including Cinderella and Rapunzel – will join the procession. Santa and Mrs Claus will wave from their magical sleigh as the parade makes its way through the city.

Entertainment and lights switch‑on

Live entertainment will take place on two stages: one at the Guildhall and the traditional stage outside the Dragon Hotel, where a new Christmas tree will stand. Santa will ceremoniously switch on Swansea’s Christmas lights before another fireworks display lights up the night sky.

Professional entertainers, fairytale characters and superheroes will be on hand to keep children and adults entertained throughout the evening.

Council leader welcomes new route

Cllr Rob Stewart, Leader of Swansea Council, said:

“The Swansea Christmas Parade is one of the city’s most cherished events – a chance for our communities to come together and celebrate the start of the festive season.

This year’s new route brings exciting opportunities to experience the magic from fresh perspectives and it promises to be a truly unforgettable evening.”

He added that the parade is the perfect opportunity to start Christmas celebrations, alongside visits to Waterfront Winterland with its ice rink and alpine bar, and the Victorian Christmas Market offering artisan gifts and festive treats.

Cllr Stewart said the parade rounds off another strong year of council‑delivered events, including the Wales Airshow, IRONMAN, Swansea Arts Weekend and Croeso.

Much‑loved Madeira Portuguese Restaurante closes its doors on Swansea’s Kingsway

End of an era for a city favourite

One of Swansea’s best‑known restaurants has closed after more than a decade as a fixture on the Kingsway. Madeira Portuguese Restaurante announced on Saturday that it had served its final meals, bringing to an end a chapter that saw the venue become a go‑to spot for celebrations, family gatherings and authentic Portuguese cuisine.

In a heartfelt message shared on Facebook, the team said:

“We’re sad to announce that, after many wonderful years as part of the Swansea landscape, we’ve made the difficult decision to close Madeira Swansea. Today is sadly our last day. It’s been a true privilege to serve you all, and we want to thank every guest who has supported us over the years.”

The owners added that while the Swansea restaurant has now closed, diners can still enjoy the same flavours at their sister venue, Ty Madeira in Cardiff.

A site with a long history

The closure also marks the latest chapter in the story of 46 The Kingsway, a building that has been part of Swansea’s social life for generations.

  • The Milkmaid (1958–early 2000s) – Opened in 1958, The Milkmaid was branded as a milk bar. It was popular with both adults and young people, decorated with dairy‑themed images on its walls, and became a familiar meeting place in the city centre.
  • Café Mambo (2000–2010) – In early 2000, the site was transformed into Café Mambo, a bar and restaurant specialising in “Miami Fusion Cuisine.” Following a £110,000 refurbishment and a full on‑licence, it served meals, snacks, cocktails and coffees throughout the day. It quickly became a popular spot to meet before heading out to the Kingsway’s nightclubs.
  • Madeira Portuguese Restaurante (2011–2025) – The site’s most recent chapter began in 2011, when Madeira opened its doors, bringing Portuguese dining to Swansea. For 14 years it was a staple of the city’s restaurant scene, known for its warm welcome, generous portions and lively atmosphere.

Warm tributes from loyal customers

News of Madeira’s closure prompted an outpouring of affection from customers who described it as their favourite restaurant in the city.

  • Veryan Walters said the family had “many happy memories of celebrating with you” and wished the team well in Cardiff.
  • Claire Novelli thanked staff for “excellent food, a wonderful welcome and great service,” adding: “We shall miss you.”
  • Emma Reed called it “our favourite restaurant” and praised Marlene and the team as “amazing people.”
  • Beverley Ann Edwards said dining there had always been “amazing” thanks to the “fabulous staff which give a very warm welcome.”
  • Melanie Gravelle described herself as “absolutely devastated,” saying she would miss “Marlene’s beautiful smile.”
  • Wendy T Hitchings called it “yet another sad loss for Swansea,” while Danny Nicholas summed up the mood with: “Gutted! My favourite restaurant in Swansea… you will be missed.”

A lasting legacy on the Kingsway

From milkshakes in the 1950s, to cocktails in the 2000s, to Portuguese cuisine in the 2010s and 2020s, the building at 46 The Kingsway has been woven into Swansea’s social fabric for nearly 70 years.

While Madeira’s closure marks the end of its latest chapter, the memories of meals, celebrations and nights out shared there will remain part of the city’s cultural story.

Swansea’s Hanbury pub set for Kingsway makeover as regeneration gathers pace

Rock‑ready redesign

The Hanbury, which has been trading under its current team for the past four years, announced on social media that it will soon undergo a long‑awaited facelift. Both the front and rear of the building are set to be refurbished, with new CGI images showing the exterior painted in black, complete with a striking mural and a classic marquee canopy listing upcoming bands and events in illuminated lettering.

The pub’s operators said the makeover was much needed, admitting that many passers‑by still didn’t realise the venue had reopened after the pandemic. They hope the new frontage will make the Hanbury more visible and underline its identity as a live music hub on the Kingsway.

“The look it deserves”

In a post to customers, the team wrote:

“Pretty much every day we get told ‘we didn’t know the place was back open’ down to the outside looking… well, tired. Hopefully this will get the word out that we are here, rocking out and having the best time. The Hanbury is finally gonna get the look it deserves.”

They also thanked regulars for their support over the past four years, saying the revamp was only possible because of the loyalty shown by customers.

Community reaction

The announcement has been met with enthusiasm from regulars and visitors alike.

Dai Storey recalled bringing friends from the Valleys:

“I stood them outside and asked ‘would you think there was a pub here?’ They all said nope. We walked inside and they said wow. They had a great night with an amazing band on — and said they’d be back if they could find it again.”

Others praised the makeover as long overdue. Paul Devois said it was “good to see one of Swansea’s oldest pubs doing well,” while David Paynter added: “You guys have done a great job bringing the pub back to life. Well done all.”

Pat Mccondochie simply summed it up with:

“Fair play, looks awesome 🤘🤘.”

For many, the new marquee canopy is a highlight. Paula Barry said:

“I so love the signs above the door — at last you can advertise bands that are coming each week.”

And Paula Davies declared:

“Amazing news 👏 bring it on — Swansea, home of rock 🤘.”

Part of the Kingsway’s transformation

The makeover comes as the Kingsway continues to undergo major regeneration. The £12m Kingsway Infrastructure Project has already reshaped the street into a greener, more pedestrian‑friendly environment, with wider pavements, new planting and improved public spaces.

The Hanbury’s facelift will add to the sense of renewal, sitting alongside new office developments, hospitality venues and public realm improvements designed to make the Kingsway a more attractive destination for residents, workers and visitors.

Next steps

Work on the pub’s exterior is expected to begin shortly, with the team promising to keep customers updated as the project progresses.

Principality Building Society opens new Swansea branch on Oxford Street

The move from Kingsway to a more central, pedestrian-friendly location reflects Principality’s focus on providing accessible cash and in-person services at a time when many financial providers are scaling back their physical networks.

The launch event welcomed a range of local organisations and charity partners, including Swansea Bay Health Board, Team Wales, Swansea MAD, and educational support service 2B Enterprising. Principality colleagues have collectively raised £30,000 for Swansea Bay Health Board’s Cwtch Clos project, which supports families with infants in neonatal care.

Vicky Wales, Chief Customer Officer at Principality Building Society, said: “Our Swansea branch has played such a key role in our history and we’re very proud that our colleagues have been able to make such a positive impact on the local community. We know that a strong branch presence is a priority for our Members, and as Principality celebrates its 165th anniversary this year we will continue investing in our branch network and provide important in-person services.”

Principality’s own research shows that over 70% of people consider branch presence a key factor when choosing a financial provider — a figure that stands out as banks across the UK continue to announce closures.

Founded in 1860, Principality now operates 53 branches and 14 agencies across Wales and its borders. The Swansea branch first opened in 1934, and the new Oxford Street location is designed to offer a modern, welcoming space while staying true to the building society’s heritage.

Major Swansea office scheme officially opens with further tenant announced

Financial company Futures First have been confirmed for the 71/72 Kingsway scheme that will accommodate up to 600 jobs.

This follows on from the announcement of flexible workspace provider IWG and travel and leisure company TUI as building tenants earlier this year.

An Optical and Aesthetics company have also submitted plans for one unit within the new 71/72 Kingsway development.

Developed by Swansea Council, the 104,000 square foot scheme is being part-funded by the Swansea Bay City Deal.

Futures First will take up over 4,300 square feet at the development.

Tenant fitouts will now take place at the development ahead of staff moving in.

Advanced discussions for all remaining space at the scheme are also ongoing and it’s anticipated the development will be 100% let in the coming months.

Guests in attendance at an official opening event included Eluned Morgan, First Minister of Wales; Dame Nia Griffith, Wales Office Minister at the UK Government; Jayne Bryant, the Welsh Government’s Cabinet Secretary for Housing and Local Government; and Julie James – Member of the Senedd for Swansea West and the Welsh Government’s Minister for Delivery.

Representatives of Swansea Council and 71/72 Kingsway tenants were also present.

Cllr Rob Stewart, Swansea Council Leader, said: “Swansea has suffered from a lack of high-quality office accommodation in recent years, which had led to a risk of businesses and local jobs moving or setting up elsewhere.

“The 71/72 Kingsway development will help stop that from happening while giving businesses there the opportunity to collaborate, network, grow and create even more employment opportunities for local people.

“We’re delighted to have secured another tenant for the building as detailed talks continue with other companies for the remaining spaces there.”

Cllr Robert Francis-Davies, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Investment, Regeneration and Tourism, said: “We know local people want more shops and a more thriving city centre, but this will only happen if there’s enough footfall there to attract those kinds of businesses, given the challenges of online shopping.

“The 71/72 Kingsway development will combine with many other schemes either complete, under construction or planned to get thousands more people working and living in the city centre, helping to support our existing traders while encouraging others to set up there in future.

“The scheme is part of a regeneration programme worth over £1bn that’s unfolding to create a modern, vibrant city centre that meets local people’s needs and aspirations.”

Wales Office Minister Dame Nia Griffith said: “It’s great news that Futures First will be the latest tenants in Swansea’s landmark 71/72 Kingsway office space.

“The UK Government’s investment in these new facilities, along with our partners, unlocks economic growth and creates jobs and opportunities for local people, delivering on our Plan for Change.”

Jayne Bryant, the Welsh Government’s Cabinet Secretary for Housing and Local Government, said: “Our Transforming Towns programme continues to provide important support to town and city centres across Wales.

“Since 2020, we have provided £91m for regeneration projects in Swansea alone.

“The 71/72 Kingsway scheme will provide high-quality office accommodation in the city and has attracted important tenants such as Futures First, IWG and Tui, which in turn will generate jobs and breathe new life into the city.”

Part of the Hertshten Group, Futures First is a financial company that provides market analysis on derivative products including commodities, equities and energy products on global exchanges.

Ryan Orton, Senior Vice President at Future First, said: “We’re thrilled to be part of the 71/72 Kingsway development. This state-of-the-art facility perfectly aligns with our commitment to innovation and represents the future of business in Swansea.

“The building’s modern infrastructure and prime location will significantly enhance our team’s productivity while providing a collaborative workspace that will boost our operations.

“Developments like this demonstrate Swansea’s growing reputation as a hub for forward-thinking businesses, and we’re excited to grow alongside this dynamic city while contributing to its economic growth.”

The 71/72 Kingsway scheme includes office spaces and shared workspaces, alongside an event hall and spaces for food and beverage businesses.

A green rooftop terrace with views over Swansea Bay also features, along with solar panels on top of the building and heat recovery systems to minimise energy use.

Three faceless store mannequins (fabric heads, torsos, and pelvises; wood or plastic articulated arms and hands) stand in a line. The first has arms raised as though in surprise or delight, the one behind is delicately fidding with the first's nipple region, and the third is reaching to grasp the second's arse at a Hudson's Bay store in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada where final contents and fixtures are for sale.

Swansea’s historic YMCA building put up for sale

Agents, Lambert Smith Hampton have listed the freehold of the 19,526 sq ft, four-storey building at £850,000.

The building is described as a “multi-let freehold investment” with a “current income of £155,388 per annum”. Agents say there is “opportunity to generate further income” by letting currently unoccupied space in the building.

Rental income is said to be “subject to increase with a new agreed lease to the YMCA over part of the building on sale of the property.”

The ground-floor has an entrance hallway, a gymnasium, ancillary space, office accommodation and access to the passenger lift and stairs.

The first floor has office accommodation, a dance studio and ancillary space and access to the Llewellyn Hall Theatre.

The second floor has further office accommodation and ancillary space with the third floor offering more office accommodation and a sports hall.

There are W.C and staff facilities on each floor.

In addition to the main building, there are also two self-contained commercial units on the ground floor accessed off The Kingsway – a café / restaurant unit and a former day nursery.

The sale does not include the car park adjacent to the YMCA building.

YMCA Swansea Chief Executive, Richard Williams said the building has been on the market for a number of months and has only recently been advertised by way of the external signage.

Mr Williams said: “YMCA Swansea is evolving to deliver our life changing youthwork in a more appropriate setting. The feedback from everyone involved is that our new city centre youth space is perfect and we have plans to both fully operate from the space and to enhance it further.

“As a result, the board of YMCA Swansea took the decision last year to seek interest from potential new owners of our main building.

“This decision was not taken lightly, given that the building contains so much social history of both Swansea and our charity, but it is one that will ultimately help us to work with more and more Young People.

“It is business as usual for all of our tenants and partners and we will work hard with both them and any new owners to keep it that way. The fitness centre also continues as normal.

“Our work will continue from the site and we look to remain in the building in the much more visible youthwork space (which was formerly the creche).

“We are now working with a number of partners across Swansea and can be found in many schools.

“We are looking to work with the new owners to ensure that it is business as usual for the many people and services that can be found within the building (of which we will be one) whilst at the same time being able to focus on our core purpose- the Young People of Swansea.”

The building was constructed in 1913 after fundraising by the YMCA, with teams of young people attempting to raise £12,000 in 12 days through pledges of money for the new building. They succeed but the building with the fit out ends up costing £20,000.

The architect of the building, Glendenning Moxham was also responsible for the former police station on Orchard Street and the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery.

The YMCA was briefly taken over by the Red Cross during the First World War as a hospital from 1914, but was handed back to the YMCA in 1919.

Dylan Thomas famously performed at the Llewellyn Hall in the building in the 1930s

After surviving the Second World War Bliz in 1941, albeit with some damage, it also fought off a compulsory purchase order in 1946 for the demolition of the building as part of the Swansea rebuild.

The building was refurbished in 2012 ahead of the building’s centenary celebrations in 2013.

Optical and Aesthetics clinic proposed for part of new city office development

The national chain, who currently have premises at Alexandra House near the train station, has submitted a ‘Change of Use’ planning application to Swansea Council to use Unit B at the council’s new office development at 71/72 Kingsway as an optical clinic with an aesthetics clinic located within.

The council, who also own the recently constructed building, have already announced that travel operator TUI and workspace provider IWG are to take up tenancies. TUI are currently also based at Alexandra House.

A Swansea Council spokesperson said: “Positive discussions with Optical Express about taking up one of the retail units that fronts onto The Kingsway as part of the development are ongoing.

“We hope to make an announcement in the coming weeks.

“Flexible workspace provider IWG and travel and leisure company TUI have already been confirmed as scheme tenants for the main office spaces area of the building, and details of other tenants will be publicised as soon as talks are finalised.”

Swansea Bay News has approached Optical Express for comment on the application.

Construction equipment blamed for Kingsway office fire

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service have released a statement regarding the fire, which closed the city’s main Kingsway road causing traffic chaos this morning (Friday 31 January).

The small fire, which was contained on the fourth floor of the building currently under construction, was believed to be accidental the fire service have announced, with equipment on site behind the cause of the incident.

A spokesperson for Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: “At 7.45am on Friday, January 31st, the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service crews from Swansea West, Morriston, Port Talbot, Swansea Central, Swansea West, Llanelli, Pontardawe and Carmarthen Fire Stations are currently in attendance at an incident along The Kingsway in Swansea City Centre.

“Crews responded to a localised fire within a seven-storey building in the 71-72 Kingsway development site.  The fire was confined to a small area on the property’s fourth floor.

“Crews utilised six breathing apparatus sets, two main jets, three thermal imaging cameras and one turntable ladder appliance to quickly extinguish the fire.  All persons were accounted for.

“Crews left the scene at 10.07am.  The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental involving equipment on site and not related to the building itself.”

The £38m office development on the site of the city’s former Oceana nightclub is nearing completion. The finished development is said to be worth £32.6m to Swansea’s economy each year with the landmark office building having enough space for 600 workers.
