All KMM QIF files now imported, all corresponding accounts now balanced [again, huge amount of manual work needed, OMZ], workaround conceived & partly implemented as PoC for GC's absence of tags for transactions, & whilst i'd say Reports are still a work-in-progress for my assessment of ok or not, overall i think i can say atm that i am quite warming now to GC, & quite able to visualise it becoming my new default home finance pkg.

Still To Do:

  • fully deploy my Tags workaround
  • finish attempting to mimic my important KMM Reports in GC
  • do a couple of account monthly statement reconciliations to assess GC's process vs KMM's.

Unless any major showstopper emerges from the above, atm i think i'll run KMM & GC in parallel over the next couple of months. At that stage i'm sure i'll know if GC gets my final 👍 or 👎 . I certainly wanna get the decision right, coz if i do decide to change over to GC alone, i don't think i could bear the frustration & gallingly inefficient manual labour needed at some future point to migrate my subsequent data back to KMM 😱

Converting my #KMyMoney data to #GnuCash via massive #QIF files exports then imports, is an excruciatingly horrible process [despite the undoubted sophistication of the GnuCash qif importer, the process still involves a huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge amount of tedious manual labour (data matching & re-categorisation), due to the substantial data structure paradigm differences between these two finance programs]. It has taken me many many days, long long days, including said all-nighter, & the process is not yet finished.

I'm doing this amount of work pretty much on a leap of faith, & atm still don't know, once i can then fully directly compare functions & features of both apps side by side, each working with my own data not just superficial samples, if it will have been worth it... ie, atm it is certainly not yet a done deal that i am formally changing my default app to GC from KMM. As a minimum the obstacles i still need to determine if i can live with or otherwise invent a workaround for, include:

  • no #Tags in GC [i use these extensively in KMM]
  • an apparent serious bug in GC's pop-up UI for scheduled transactions due or imminent
  • transaction memo-space in GC is simply woeful.
  • customisable Reports. When i last used GC well over a decade ago, it was just terrible for its reporting capability. I am excited to find that with so much more development effort & time elapsed, its Reports are now substantially better [including my mandatory would-be-a-showstopper-if-still-unavailable customisable forward-projection linear account balance trajectory plots]. I've not yet explored whether its other plots also meet my needs, or if KMM might remain better here.

Pulled an accidental all-nighter, due to Fighting The Good Fight. Then grabbed a few hours kip in bed from 0830 - 1400. Consequently, today... There Shall Be Coffee!

Fwiw, here, FtGF took the form of foolishly embarking on the exceedingly unwise project, after ~13 years using #KMyMoney [which itself came to be after a decade or so of #Quicken], of exporting all its accounts as a series of #QIF files, then attempting to import them all into #GnuCash. What could possibly go wrong?

Plenty! 😱

@uvok Donkey's years ago i dipped my toe in the water with #GnuCash, but i was not smart enough for it, so it made me go 🤯 I've been happily using #KMyMoney for several years, with a brief dalliance in #Skrooge. Atm i've decided to explore GnuCash again coz it's several versions on from back when i looked at it. So far i've imported several, but not all, of my KMM Accounts, & figured out some of the differences, but i still have much to do before i'll know if it might now be suitable for me. Not only, but especially, one of the showstoppers would be if i can't create reports showing projected forward balances [based on current balances + all my repeating scheduled transactions] as line charts. KMM does this quite well, & i rely on it heavily for longer term household budgeting purposes.

@WindOfChange Hi. I use two #Activities, "Main" & "Other". Each one has four #VirtualDesktops [for many years i used nine, but a couple of years ago downsized to four].

On "Main" i use my browser/s on VD1, :thunderbird: on VD2, general stuff on VD3, & my #QEMU #KVM #VMs on VD4. At times of specific short-term tasks, some of those VDs will also have other apps, eg, during internet banking VD1 will also have open my #KeePassXC & #KMyMoney... etc.

When i do updates, i rarely bother opening #Konsole, but instead use #Yakuake [which i divide into four virtual terminals].

On "Other", i do...
🦗 🦗🦗

With February's fast-approaching #Plasma6 arrival, & its potential removal of Activities altogether afaik, i expect soon to be quietly grieving the removal of a major KDE / Plasma component that i've "used" since KDE4, without ever once discovering a compelling use-case of it for me. 😜
