Machete wielding biker jailed after threatening to stab group of teens

20-year-old James Driver, from Caewern, brandished the knife at three boys in an incident in Aberavon on 22 January.

Terrified onlookers described how Driver brandished a machete and charged at a group of youngsters while threatening to stab them.

He then then rode off on a motorbike, going around a busy roundabout the wrong way cutting-up a number of vehicles, before driving over a pedestrian footpath into Lidl supermarket’s car park.

He was later arrested on suspicion of affray and possession of a bladed article. The machete was found by police officers who were conducting a search of Driver’s address.

In court, Driver pleaded guilty to affray, possession of bladed article, possession of an offensive weapon and dangerous driving. He has five previous convictions for nine offences including driving without a licence and without insurance.

He has been sentenced to sixteen months in prison, serving up to 40% of that sentence in custody before being released on licence to serve the remainder in the community.  He was also banned from driving for 15 months and will have to take an extended test before he can get a licence in future.

PC Lincoln Burrow from South Wales Police said: “James Driver’s behaviour for all three of his offences was unacceptable. Threatening and intimidating behaviour such as that he has displayed will not be tolerated.

“We hope that James will use his time in prison to think hard about his actions and change his ways.”

Teenage girl sentenced to 15 years for attempted murder at Ammanford school

The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was found guilty of the three charges following a trial at Swansea Crown Court earlier this year. She had previously admitted to three counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, and possession of a bladed article on a school premises.

Today, a year on from the incident, she was sentenced to 15 years in custody, and will serve a minimum of 7.5 years in detention, less the 367 days the girl has already been held on remand. She will be on license for the remainder of the sentence.

The court previously heard how emergency services were called to Ysgol Dyffryn Aman in Ammanford on Wednesday, April 24, following reports that three people had been injured. Two teachers – Fiona Elias and Liz Hopkin – along with a child, were admitted to hospital for treatment having been stabbed by a pupil.

CCTV cameras captured the defendant walking through the school that morning, before sitting beside a stage in the school hall and stabbing the floor with a knife.

She was then seen speaking to Mrs Elias on two occasions – first inside the school building, and then outside – before attacking her with the knife.

When Mrs Hopkin stepped in to help, she was also badly injured, sustaining deep cuts to her neck and back.

A few minutes later, after being moved away from the two teachers who needed urgent medical attention, the defendant was seen attacking a child with the same knife.

She was arrested at the scene, and was charged with three counts of attempted murder the next day.

Following today’s sentencing, Detective Chief Superintendent Ross Evans of Dyfed-Powys Police said: “While this sentence marks the end of the criminal justice proceedings, and a year since the incident occurred, I understand that for the victims the impact remains ongoing.

“All three suffered physical harm at the hands of the defendant and although wounds can heal with time, it will take considerably longer to recover from the mental trauma her actions caused.

“We have heard from the victim impact statements that they relive the events on April 24, 2024 daily, which evidences the profound impact it had on their wellbeing. As we now leave the legal proceedings behind us, I wish all the victims well in their recovery.

“For the students who unfortunately witnessed such an act of violence as they went about their day, I sincerely hope they are still able to view their school as a place of safety, and that today’s sentence shows that any attempt to compromise school safety will not be tolerated.

“Finally, I would like to thank all our emergency services colleagues who responded on the day, along with the teachers and staff at Ysgol Dyffryn Aman. Thanks also to Carmarthenshire County Council for the professional way in which they dealt with the incident and to the local community for the support they offered to pupils.”

Two men jailed after intimidating family with samurai sword in road rage rampage

South Wales Police say 29-year-old Stephen Harris from Uplands and 27-year-old Lathan Gray from Bonymaen were in a Citroen Xsara Picasso on Llangyfelach Road in Treboeth driven by Harris at around 6.20pm on Sunday 20 April. The vehicle was doing wheel spins and handbrake turns in the middle of a busy main road.

Following a near-collision, a member of public challenged the pair, who then proceeded to follow the challenger’s vehicle, with his partner and seven-year-old son inside, in a threatening and intimidating manner.

Once the victim stopped at the nearby Texaco garage, Harris then stopped his vehicle to block the exit. Grey then exited the vehicle and made further threatening advances towards the victim, including lifting his jumper to show the long handle of the blade tucked into his trousers.

The vehicle also had a false registration plate and was uninsured. Harris was already disqualified from driving until 2029.

Officers located the vehicle a short distance away from the incident, and a further kitchen knife was found within the vehicle when searched, as was a hammer.

Both were charged and remanded and pleaded guilty the following morning.

Lathan Gray has been sentenced to 48 weeks in prison. Stephen Harris has been sentenced to 26 weeks in prison.

Detective Inspector Danielle Thorne from South Wales Police said: “Stephen Harris and Lathan Gray are two men who believe that the law does not apply to them.

“Their intimidating behaviour, particularly towards a family with a young child, was totally disgraceful.

“We hope that they both take their time in prison to think better of this kind of thuggish behaviour.”

Extended sentence for convicted killer after knifepoint robbery

54-year-old Brynley Stephens, from Gendros, carried out the attack at a property on Maesglas Road, forcing his victim to hand over his wallet, car keys and mobile phone.

During the incident, Stephens pressed a knife to the victim’s neck, which left the victim with an injury.

Swansea Crown Court heard that Stephens has 21 previous convictions for 95 offences including manslaughter, multiple assaults, making threats to kill, aggravated burglary and weapons offences.

During a sentencing hearing, Judge Geraint Walters told Stephens: “You have had the capacity to kill in the past. It does not seem to have diminished”.

Judge Walters said that Stephens had “a propensity towards committing acts of violence” and posed a substantail risk to the public.

Stephens was handed an extended sentence of eight years in prison as a dangerous offender, comprising five years in prison followed by an extended three-year licence period. The parole board will be required to determine if Stephens is safe to be released after serving two-thirds of the custodial portion of his sentence.

Stephens was also given a 10-year restraining order banning him from contacting his victim.

Detective Sergeant Richard Jones from South Wales Police said: “Brynley Stephens carried out this senseless attack with no warning. The victim could have been any member of the public, making him an incredibly dangerous man.

“He has received a significant sentence for committing this robbery, which is due to his appalling previous record and character.

“It is reassuring to know that a person like him will now be behind bars for a significant amount of time, and will be unable to enact any further crimes against unsuspecting victims.”

He was also found to be in possession of a flick knife during the incident.

In February this year, Llewellyn was spotted acting suspiciously in the street by officers. When apprehended soon after, officers found that he had attempted to hide a wallet containing large bags of powder and pills, as well as a quantity of cash, by throwing it over a nearby garden fence.

Llewellyn pleaded guilty to possession with intent to supply Class A drugs, possession of a pointed article in a public place, possessing criminal property and being concerned in the supply of Class A drugs.

He was also found guilty of assault, having pleaded not guilty to this offence.

He has been sentenced to 51 months in prison.

“From physical violence to supplying drugs onto our streets, his criminal activity has one common effect – that it makes life a misery for everyone that comes into contact with him.

“He will now spend another lengthy spell in prison as a result.”

Knife crime measures an ‘important step forward’ says Llanelli MP

Dame Nia Griffith MP hailed the UK Government’s new Crime and Policing Bill as “an important step forward” to reverse the increase in knife crime related incidents that has been seen across the UK, including in Dyfed Powys where it has gone up by a whopping 243% since 2015.

The Bill, currently making its way through Parliament, will give the police new powers to seize, retain and destroy knives held in private, applicable when the police believe the knife will be used in a violent crime.

It also includes strong new rules to prevent online knife sales, including personal liability for senior managers of online platforms who fail to act on illegal content including knives and offensive weapons.

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper will also introduce a new offence of possession of an offensive weapon with intent to use unlawful violence. It also increases the maximum penalty for offences relating to the sale of offensive weapons.

The Bill will also strengthen age verification requirements for online sale of bladed products. The law will be named after 16-year old Ronan Kanda, stabbed to death in Wolverhampton by a boy who had used his mother’s ID to purchase a 22-inch sword online.

Dame Nia Griffith, Labour MP for Llanelli, said: “This legislation to crack down on knife crime and protect local communities is an important step forward. Far too many young lives are being lost to violence, with families and communities left devastated as a result.  The worrying increase in knife crime since 2015 needs to be properly tackled as a matter of urgency.

“This Labour UK Government has set an ambitious mission for the country to halve knife crime over the next decade.  Stronger laws and proper enforcement is the start and we must continue to pursue every possible avenue that we can to save young lives.”

Re sharing this transcript in context of #Adolescence series.
In Glasgow particularly we have long-standing problems with youngsters killing each other. Recently boy of 15 killed, suspect 14. Gang related knife crime is frequently involved. But the Violence Reduction Unit has helped reduce deaths in the city. I'm sure there are lessons others elsewhere can learn from.
