I was fortunate enough to work on the Knossos Urban Landscape Project back in 2008. It is still considered one of my favourite archaeological projects.

Here is a short description of that particular visit to Greece.

For centuries, Knossos was regarded merely as a city of myth and legend until it was unearthed in 1900 CE by English archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans.

The excavated site, adorned with frescoes, shed light on the Minoan sport of bull jumping and made the ancient tale of Theseus and the Minotaur (a creature that was half-man and half-bull) seem less fantastical. During bull-jumping, male athletes engaged closely with the bull as they leaped over its horns. This practice likely inspired the ancient perception of the 'myth' of the Minotaur, as these athletes appeared to embody the traits of both men and bulls. And, the discovery of the palace's complex layout lent credibility to the legend of the labyrinth.

It was Evans who first referred to the ancient inhabitants of Crete as 'Minoan,' named after King Minos of Knossos. His excavation and reconstruction efforts, though controversial, laid the groundwork for all subsequent research of Minoan civilization.

Our penultimate port stop on our 2016 cruise aboard Royal Princess in the Mediterranean was to the Greek island of Crete and as we've an interest in ancient history and archaeology and architecture - which you'll find in abundance in this part of the world - we booked a trip to visit the ancient site of Knossos, a major centre for the Minoan culture that dates from around 1900 to 1300 BCE. The opinion that it might be the oldest city in Europe and its association with the myth of Theseus and the minotaur in the labyrinth gave us high expectations in a location that sadly disappointed. The reconstruction work felt overdone and stripped Knossos of a lot of the authenticity we see in other historical sites.

An arid, hot site of ruins exposed from an archaeological dig. This portrait orientation shot shows a clear sky meeting hills of pale dirt, scrubby grass, and patches of dark green bushes. The hills meet a dip in the ground and disappear behind a line of trees that rise up towards us; a mixture of tall, thin, Mediterranean style and more conventional shapes, all with leaf colouring that leans towards the olive and yellow ends of the green spectrum. It feels like a very dry place. We're on an elevated section of land looking towards these trees mostly below our eye level, and beneath us there are ruins of walls in sandy-coloured stone, flat sections of similarly-coloured paving, and a flight of steps with edges of tightly-packed stone.

@bobthetraveler some thoughts:
there is a cheap and excellent bus service from #Heraklion, so you don't really need a car to get to #Knossos.
sewage and rain drains are intentionally mixed in modern drainage systems, because the rain water helps to dilute and move the sewage.
the #PhaistosDisc is often called the first known "movable type system", which is correct. some people might conflate that with a printing system a la Gutenberg.

Sir Arthur Evans was the first one to excavate Knossos, so we own him for finding this hidden gem - till then it was though Knossos is a mythical place. Unfortunately, he also got himself some paint and went on to "restore" some ancient frescoes. The results were, to put it mildly, not impressive.

I'm still playing around with #FS2Open and mods/games found on #Knossos

There's a lot fun to be found.

Don't think "Wings of Dawn", Babylon Project, #WCSaga and Blighted are the same genre of game anymore?

Still… many mods are more fun than most commercial games and all are working natively in linux.

Yay!

Endlich am Schauplatz des Lucas Arts-Klassikers Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis.
