The second half of my reflections.

#AlphaMedia #KRES #KWIX #Moberly #Missouri

It's been a lot to process for my erstwhile colleagues and me, along with our neighbors. It has been a sad and devastating past couple days as a new normal sets in and a content desert develops over our verdant, rolling pastures and croplands. I'm elated to have received messages of support and encouragement from friends in and out of the broadcasting community.

And yet, there is potential. A wildfire may leave a charred landscape in its path, but from the ash a green pasture and new forests can grow. It's a turning of the page. That next page, the new chapter, may still be in broadcasting, or it may be elsewhere, or it may be a stay-at-home dad to an ebullient two-year-old. But it's blank, and ready for the story to unfold.Thank you to everyone who listened to my farm updates and Scholars Weekly programs the past decade on the old sticks. A big thank you to Brad for taking a chance on an overeager 20-something just craving a return to the good side of 36°30, for opening the platform to celebrate the region's rich and still-evolving heritage of Scholar Bowl, and for keeping me involved even when I ended up elsewhere. A major thank you to all my colleagues past and present, in a newsroom where even amid the frivolity, history was made and documented.

Additionally, a special thank you to Mike, Clay, Larry and Greg for allowing me to share my talents on your airwaves during my 11-year tenure with KRES. It would have been very difficult to remain in the profession without this unique arrangement that happened to introduce me to the whole work-from-home thing a few months before it became a necessity. As I said, a new chapter is ahead. I may not have written the plot twist that abruptly closed the last one, but I await what the next few pages hold and beyond.

Meanwhile, the bookmark is a HyVee receipt with a large honey-do list scribbled on the back. I suppose I need to tackle that with the extra time I now have on my hands.

(Two photos follow, one of a kitchen radio affixed to the bottom of a dish cabinet, the other of an empty notebook page sitting atop a closed laptop.)

I had a chance to process the news and reflect, not only on what this means for my career going forward, but what Tuesday's moves could do to the fabric of #rural #Missouri.

The best way I can describe it is a turning of the page. I might not have made the recent page turn, but it's a new chapter, and I'm looking to start writing the next one.

Screenshots of my reflections attached to this and the next post.

It's taken me awhile to write this, in part because of the unique situation I've been in since moving to Sedalia nearly eight years ago. Even years after finding myself on the periphery of the Kansas City media market, and even when providing content to stations in other parts of the Midwest, Moberly remained the home set of sticks, the mothership.

KWIX and KRES were the epitome of small market radio, heavily investing time and talent in the communities they serve, embedding themselves in their everyday lives. And we did that with every accident report, city council and school board meeting, state capitol visit, cattle sale, town and county fair, final score, and annual church picnic. It was the one thing that I sought to capture at all of my professional radio gigs, whether it was in that red van rattling down Route 12 to Gentry, interviewing the top exhibitors outside the Benson Center, or even writing up a reader about the year's sorghum scholarship recipients. It was destination radio, the rare signal where once you locked in the signal, you could pretty much rip the knob off. My grandma Carolyn didn't go to that length on the set in her kitchen, but she was a devoted listener. It was her dutiful listening that filled me in on potential vacancies, including the one that would lead me through the door the evening of June 16th, 2013. If she were still with us today, Grandma would have listened to all my reports from Scholar Bowl state over the weekend, one week after sending updates from Small School Nationals, where Hallsville finished third. Like countless of others, Grandma would have tuned in for the latest weather, especially that line of thunderstorms that rolled in around 2 a.m. Tuesday morning. It was a habit built over the course of nearly 74 years for a large portion of the population in Northeast and Central Missouri, from Loose Creek to Lucerne and Wayland to Windsor. Those almost-74 years of community involvement came to a sudden end late Tuesday morning. I along with many of my colleagues, several of whom had been there for decades, were out the door, the first of many in the state to find themselves bewildered to what had just unfolded. A near-identical situation had also occurred in Bethany and Cameron, Farmington and Festus, and Lebanon and Waynesville. A sudden silencing of dedicated, locally focused broadcasters. A stinging rip of the tapestry woven through our communities, our schools, and even our shared history as Missourians. A shattering of a template for how broadcasters can serve their communities.

A Black Tuesday for Outstate Missouri.

It's been awhile since I posted anything.

Unfortunately, it's going to be awhile longer. #AlphaMedia eliminated all local content creation for their stations across rural #Missouri. I was among those let go.

I'm doing well at the moment. Several of my colleagues are also coming to terms with the move. A good chunk of the state will be hurting for awhile, as a trusted source for decades was scaled down in a matter of minutes.
