Day #11 of Fan-art - And I'm done. It could be refined more if I'm totally honest, but rather than fiddle and nudge things around for a small eternity, it's better to move on and do better next time. Like one of my art idols so often say; "go next!"

All that said, let's do a tally for the stated project goals and see how well we did.

- This will be a fan-art project.
CHECK

- The main goal is to do a character piece of DC Comics characters Captain Atom & Power Girl.
CHECK

- Secondary goal is to capture it in the style of DeviantArtist Phil Cho.
CHECK

- The Central idea is to have them standing back to back, one looking downwards, the other upward.
CHECK

- Their faces ought to be the focal point of the piece.
CHECK...?

- Embers or petals or something floaty/drifty is needed as a prop to make this idea of mine work.
CHECK

- And the overall mood is dramatic mystery.
Nah, it ended more somber in overall mood. With a touch of melancholy perhaps. That's not bad, it's just a bit different from what the original goal was.

- I'm going for a static mid-shot.

- Embers in the foreground?
No - there's no foreground elements.

- Characters in the middle ground
CHECK

- A dark background - possibly cityscape/skyline
While not a city skyline, the background is still pretty darn dark. So, CHECK.

Alright, that's a wrap people. From here on out, it's all about that good old mileage and refine the workflow.

Day #10 of Fan-art - On the 10th day of fan-art, my true love sent to me... one finished background.

I did not draw that Earth, far from it. I found some free clip-art of Earth, did the good ol' drag & drop and called it done. After I added the atmosphere glow around it. I also found a neat little star brush in Krita's default brush pack. I also slapped a hard light layer on top of everything with a very bright yellow to not only simulate sunlight, but also to tie all the colors together. It has something like 5% opacity, so it's super faint. But it's there.

Captain Atom got that chromatic shine to him and some more details to his hair. Power Girl got her gauntlet tweaked a little. I'm very happy with how this piece turned out. It took a while and it doesn't hold up at closer inspection, so there's plenty of room for improvement.

However...

I found a workflow, style, and subject matter that I enjoy. All those kinks of refinement, speed, efficiency, and yada-yada-yada can and will be ironed out with some good ol' mileage baby. And that mileage may very well blast. Why? Because I'm having fun, that's why.

I figure one more session and I'll call this one done. I'm not sure if Captain Atom will get any more attention from me since it comes down to polish/refinement more than anything else. Power Girl on the other hand needs far more attention. Shading her cape, arm, and detailing her hair are the big priorities. I've shut myself in the foot with poorly defined light sources. Instead of tearing down and starting over, I'd rather start a new piece keeping the "mistakes" from this piece in mind.

Day #9 of Fan-art - Flame on! Or something like that. I turned to the YouTuber Gammatrap and his stylized fire tutorial for both Captain Atom and Power Girl's fire. Nothing fancy, but it fits nicely with the overall style. Sticking to existing colors in the palette helps unifying the piece.

Beyond that, I experimented a bit with some highlights, added facial details, and adding some background element. Ignore the green hue, it's just an early stage placeholder.

I figure rather than trying too hard to figure something out, it'd be better to keep it simple stupid and do more elaborate, fancy stuff later down the line with another piece.

Slapping a basic geometric shape as a background element is something I grabbed from the artist SpeedL00ver. Or was it Marc Brunet? Either way, it works. I liked how the hands/flames of each character got caught by the edges of the circle, which is placed dead center. Wish I could say with confidence that it was planned all along, but nope. A happy little accident.

Day #8 of Fan-art - I didn't draw nearly as much as I'd like last week, so hopefully I can "catch up" this week and get back into the groove.

Power Girl is moooostly done? Line art is in place and I've experimented with the shadows. Arm anatomy is surprsingly lacking. I don't want her to be too big or too defined. I like that Captain Atom is bigger and has that dehydrated look. With Power Girl I'd like to go for something... for the lack of a better term, healthier. Shading goes a long way for that, but to get that right, I need to figure out the light setup.

Right now I lean towards two light sources - the big blue nuclear flame in Captain Atom's palm, and a dimmer ember like light that rises from Power Girl's palms.

Then I need to figure out the background. So... plenty of work remains and it is slow going. But I'm making progress, which is all that matters at this stage.

Day #7 of Fan-art - Line art for Captain Atom more or less done. I'll need to do some tweaks and add details to the face and hair, but I'd say that I'm close to like 90% done with the line art. It's not perfect! But good enough. The biggest take away is that I think I've found a workflow that works for me. It can be refined and improved over time. But for now, I'm very happy where I am.

So, what I did was use a Krita feature called Layer Style and selected Stroke. This creates a line of a consistent color and thickness around whatever you're drawing. When I applied this to my flats layer, BOOM, instant Phil Co style outline. The internal detail lines were put on their own layer using a fineliner brush.

I also started experimenting with basic shadows and... got lost in the process. Not in a bad way! I just kept going as if I couldn't stop. Why? Well, because it was fun. Believe it or not. The shadows aren't perfect and I might have to start all over again because I just dived in without taking into account the final light setup so.... yeah. Learned a lot though.

Next up I'll give Power Girl a similar treatment. I'm actually excited to start. What a wonderful feeling :-)

Day #6 of Fan-art - Captain Atom got his due, pants and gloves in place. I was surprised when I started breaking down his color palette. It was so... simple? Compared to the complexity of the figure I mean. Granted, a lot of that complexity comes from his shredded, dehydrated superhero physique. Along with that metallic shine/glossiness. I had a hard time getting the red color from the reference, and the one that I got was VERY saturated and bright. So, I just took Power Girl's cape colors instead.

Next up is probably going to be the line art stage. Phil Cho's style in that regard is very simple; one thick outline, one consistent thinner line for details. No line weight, no tapering. And the internal/detail lines don't fully connect more often than not.

As much as I like Phil Cho's style, I do like myself a good G-pen, which has tapering and line weight as it's bread and butter. Even if I'm not a master of it yet.

I'll also need to make a pit-stop to review a tutorial about stylistic flames. Chances are I'll re-use the blue colors I already have rather than expand my color palette even further. Keep it simple, stupid.
