Me: This stuff is really expensive and I would prefer a version with this other side chain that isn't commercially available. How hard could it be to make?

What kind of support would make you actually want to do public engagement?
We’re designing training and resources for basic scientists and your input can help shape them!

#Organoide #Assembloids #CancerResearch #Neuroonkologie #LabLife
Watching my system.
It's an older model which cannot be controlled with a computer program, so you have to operate it manually.

😉 #LabLife #Zellkultur
Mein Tag im Labor läuft oft ohne echte Pause – weil viele Arbeitsschritte zeitkritisch & präzise sein müssen. 🧪 Heute: neue Ko-Kulturen mit primären Makrophagen – gemeinsam mit meinen Kolleg:innen. #RealScientistsDE #LabLife
Public engagement isn’t just for extroverts or science communicators.
It’s for all of us. We want to know what would make it feel more possible to help shape future tools and support for scientists like you.
If you’re a basic scientist, we’d love to hear your perspective in this short survey open until 8 June:

#LabLife #ForschungMitMenschen
Nice to know my entire week was a waste in the lab by taking my NMRs Friday afternoon. I should have held off until Monday...
Hey basic scientists!
🚨 We need your help.
How do you view public engagement? What gets in the way?

The problem with refilling a water jacketed incubator is not having any idea how full it is while you're filling. Maybe it needs 5 minutes! Maybe it needs 30! Maybe you flood the TC room when it over flows!
(if someone knows a secret gauge that's standard on incubators, please, please, please, tell me where it is)

This is what 1500 samples of frozen glycerol stocks of plasmid-containing bacteria look like going into autoclave bags. I'm reducing the collection from ~8000 to the most essential ~600 for saving. The lab is slowly clearing out as I send out reagents/notebooks to lab alumni, give away equipment, and throw out/recycle things no one will want. There is so much stuff after 36 years! On July 1, I am an Emeritus Professor.
The Growing Impact of Organic Chemicals on Modern Industry and Environmental Sustainability
Organic chemicals are carbon-based compounds that form the foundation of life and countless industrial applications. These versatile substances, ranging from simple hydrocarbons to complex polymers, play a crucial role in various sectors.

Things I have done today (as legit parts of my job):
helped sweep & mop a really disgusting floor
mopped up the mess after we tipped over the bucket of dirty water onto the floor of another room
walked a cart across part of campus
walked the same cart back with a 20 L can of ethanol
met with a person from the machine shop to discuss repurposing some fancy incubator shelves
walked a second incubator shelf across part of campus, then back when the machine shop was already closed for the day
crawled around on the floor for 1-2 h while threading tubing through weird gaps in paneling and then fitting pipe insulation around the tubing (also splicing some tubing together because I didn't have two long pieces of the right type, and then having to trim ends anyway)
(there are probably more things, but I was doing the cleaning first with a grad student and turned to her and went "yeah, this is what it means to have a PhD")
Wait! To export something from PowerPoint at 300 DPI I have to do a change to the windows registry?!!?
I knew that #msoffice really sucks, but this is taking it to a whole new fucking level.
I usually stay out of their ecosystem, but collaborators...

#teaching at an uni:
yesterday we had a power outage in the lab during a practical course. We checked everything twice, called supervisors, called an electrician. Then I noticed that one of the students had put a cable on a heating plate and it melted 🫠
They had the nerve to ask if that meant we wouldn't finish on time.
