"Since October 6, 2025:
- largest rallies in Alberta history are held in support of striking teachers
- Danielle Smith and the UCP respond to this historic support by legislating teachers back to work using the Notwithstanding clause of the constitution. The finance minister and the education minister admit the clause was used to avoid an arbitration decision that almost certainly would have favoured the teachers.
- No meaningful response is seen from the ATA or the labour movement, so Albertans, without any institutional support, organize recall campaigns across the province and begin a historic petition drive to stop public money going to private schools. As of today almost half of the UCP caucus is facing recall (although the Nathan Neudorf recall is almost certainly a scam to avoid an actual recall).
- Danielle Smith and the UCP state that the recall and public initiative legislation is being 'misused' ( i.e. against them)and must be changed.
- the 'Keeping Alberta Forever Canadian' citizen initiative is approved and then completely ignored by Smith and the UCP.
- The UCP holds its AGM and separatists are cheered wildly and openly hateful speech is given standing ovations.
- Smith and the UCP announce Bill 14, a law which will ban people from starting political parties with the word conservative and also retroactively allow the separatists to hold a referendum.
- The original separatist referendum question is ruled unconstitutional by the Court of Kings Bench.
- Smith and the UCP add the notwithstanding clause to three anti trans laws. No legal challenges can be made to the laws. Children in Alberta will now have to have their genitals inspected to play sports at school.
- Bill 14 passes and the separatists file another referendum question.
- The Alberta education minister sends a letter to all parents with children in public schools exhorting them to 'celebrate the birth of christ'.
This all happened in less than 2 months, and I left things out.
Freedom to Smith and her supporters is subjugation for everyone else.
Keep organizing, keep resisting; cause folks if we don't stop this soon, there is a knock coming in the middle of the night."
- Rory Gill (former president of CUPE Alberta)
