Working on joining the whole thing together. My own design - admittedly making it up as I go!

An elaborate unfinished project in tatting and beading, with harlequin motifs and beaded round elements, shown on a hand with a tatting shuttle ready to do a join. Colors are various shades of blue with gold and bright yellow.

Quote of the day, 8 October: St. Louis Martin

My dear Friend,

I won’t be able to arrive in Alençon until Monday. It seems like a long time to me, and I’m longing to be with you.

Needless to say, your letter made me very happy, except I see that you’ve tired yourself out far too much. So I strongly recommend calm and moderation, above all in your work. I have some orders from the Compagnie Lyonnaise; once again, don’t worry so much. We’ll manage, with God’s help, to build a good little company.

I had the happiness of receiving Communion at Notre-Dame des Victoires, which is like a little heaven on earth. I also lit a candle for the intention of our entire family.

I kiss you with all my heart, while waiting for the happiness of being with you again. I hope that Marie and Pauline are being very good!

Your husband and true friend, who loves you for life.

Saint Louis Martin

Letter to St. Zélie Guérin Martin
From Paris, 8 October 1863

Over the summer I made a cursed object: a bobbin lace pillow.

It’s made in a traditional way, passed down from a woman in Orsa. Only, instead of the horse hair she suggested I had to make it with human hair. The hair was ethically harvested, don’t worry. And it smells quite nicely of shampoo!

This style of pillow is for making freehand lace, called dalknyppling in Swedish.

Watching Silent Hill 2 Remake. James the protag did some little puzzle and a wardrobe opened with a wedding dress in it. The wedding dress had some nice lace on the bodice.

See, I think we can apply the 'something old, something new' principle to wedding dresses: antique lace designs. But also the cut of the dress could be "slutty".

I am proficient in quite a few 100s of years old lacemaking techniques. But how do we take 'bridal' and make it 'slutty'? 🤔

When I couldn't get my Adderall due to really bad drug shortages last year, they put me on a proportional dose of Ritalin.

(I really would like to stock up on my meds because drug shortages are terrible. The medical system doesnt allow you to.)

The Adderall at a certain dose gives me more GI pain and more migraines. Ritalin doesn't, but its not as strong for focusing.

Anyways I got a lot of lace made yesterday and today. 😆
Hopefully guitar today?

Ok. Hi.

So I took some of my spare Adderall to see if I want to switch back. That was two days ago.

Yesterday, I went lace crazy. Just bringing out my bobbin lace pillows, my needle lace work, looking at patterns, winding bobbins, looking for books that *aren't* sold on Amazon, looking for my lace instruction books I have here, following tutorials.
The ADHD is still present, its just focused adhd. 😂🥲

The thing is, Adderall is stronger than Ritalin. Idk why.

Hi.

So lace wasn't originally made by machine, like it largely is today! It was made by hand in a variety of ways: knots, loops and weaving.

Elena Kanagy-Loux probably can be considered a master lacemaker. She does bobbin and needle lace for museums, for demonstrations, and even for couture clothing and jewelry. (I forget if she can do frivolite/tatting.)

Here's a short of her talking about an over 200 year old veil. youtube.com/shorts/4fudNm_FJVY

Good morning.

I admitted to my friend I am not good at making my own tatting patterns. (Lace.)
I said "We can't be good at everything."

I'm ok with this sentiment. (I have had past issues with people thinking im good at everything and know everything. Bad times.)

I just have a lot of interests.
I'm ok using patterns people have made. I just modify them. A lot. 😅 I can never leave a knitting, crochet, sewing or tatting pattern alone.

With bobbin lace (also called pillow lace by some), you legit just move a bunch of sticks with some thread (or wire) attached to them.
You move the bobbins in sequence according to a pattern. It is literally an analog algorithm.

If you have any familiarity with the history of computers and history of machine made cloth and lace, there ya go. Machines that made cloth and lace were the first computers. They used complex punch cards to weave.

Good morning.

My convention is tomorrow. It might be the last convention of the season, idk? There is one that i have to drive quite a ways to attend. (I hate driving.)
I have to look back at my records to see if it was worth attending.

I have to work on prints and a price menu next.

I am making a few things more like bracelets and earrings, all lace. My god I hate working with beads sometimes when it comes to tatted lace.

I MAY try out bobbin lace earrings?

There is always a lot of talk about what to wear on your head in the folklore costuming community.

Traditionally you would cover your hair. Currently we don’t (for everyday wear). People feel uncomfortable wearing traditional headwear with the costume, others feel it’s a disservice to tradition to not wear it. This becomes an evergreen discussion.

I wanted to pitch an interesting proposition: headbands! I’m mired in the fertile soil of Swedish trad costuming, but I’m looking to Norwegian traditions for this.

When I was last in Trondheim I noted that the Trønderbunad has several types of headwear and amongst them are embroidered diadems and head wraps. This is seemingly a younger tradition than the old fashioned wraps and hats. Now, in Sweden we have a problem: the hat is where the traditional lace goes. If you lose the hat, you lose the reason to make the lace, and perhaps the knowledge of making the lace too! Therefore I humbly suggest headbands as a modern alternative, for lace preservation and a modern, feminine folkloric accessory. It is a huvudbonad, which more people might be comfortable wearing for celebrations, which can still carry traditional significance, depending on materials and techniques.

Just my personal opinion. I think they’re neat.
