A November sunset at one of the best-known landmarks where I live in NE England.
This is the Earl of Durham's Monument, which dominates Penshaw Hill in Sunderland, although it's usually just referred to as 'Penshaw Monument'.
It was completed in 1845 (funded by public subscription) to commemorate John Lambton, 1st Earl of Durham (1792โ1840), Governor-General of British North America and author of the Durham Report on the future governance of the American territories.
It's something of a fondly admired iconic feature and can be viewed from miles around.
Inspired by the Temple of Hephaestus in Athens and the care of the National Trust since 1939, it is a Grade I listed structure.
