This is an Oregon sunstone and the red area inside is called “schiller”, a small pocket of copper. By keeping it in the pavilion (the back “point”) of my stone it gives the illusion that the whole stone is this color, though you can see in the second pic there are actually clear areas. Light magic!

I used to sketch in an app on my iPad. I found that I spent more time trying to get the software to work the way I wanted it to than actually drawing. So I went back to colored pencils in my sketchbook.

I sketched this nearly three years ago and have not yet made it. The thing holding me up is that I don't have the triangular stones I need. They need to be almost identical in shape/size.

So I've decided to polish the stones myself; I have slabs and a CabKing. #lapidary… (1/2)

Took this baby through all the sanding grit and now she’s gonna get some Diamond polish

A wet yellowish green "chunk" of rough uncut rock. This is green Serpentine, a carving stone sometimes used as an alternative to Jade. Photo by Peachfront. From my collection, but I'll sell it to US shipping addresses...

Decided to try faceting an X-cube at an angle. Rather than waste the whole 20x20x20 cube I sawed it at an angle then was able to get 2 stones out of it.'
These came out wild with the x slightly below the girdle. I was able to get even more colors out..

2 pieces of faceted glass in a barion design cut from an X-cube. X-cubes are 4 pieces of optically clear glass glued together with a Dicrolic film between them. They are or were used in projectors. Normally when white light enters ones side green goes out the back and red or blue go out the sides. In these since the colors are mixing I am getting teal, yellow white and red, blue, green colors reflected back.

Like a poor mans rutile.

If you own a Facetron and a 3d Printer and need an 80 tooth gear for the cost of printing it you are set. Go to thingiverse and search for facetron.

It will bring up a 80 tooth gear someone made. I printed one and used it to print a star out of quartz as a test. Was leery of using my expensive resin laps to prepolish and polish it so a CD with cerium oxide was used to finish it. Alignment was perfect so it would not have dug into a lap.

Wow!!! I like many facetors back the the 1980's bought chunks of the glass used in the Hartford Site Manhattan Project. I have 2 interior pieces left and while very soft it has an RI of 1.94 and excellent dispersion. The bright yellow color though is a turnoff for many. Also 2 pieces of the exterior windows. RI on those is only 1.54 and dispersion is similar to quartz. They were used during the production of the plutonium for the Trinity and Fat Man bombs.

I cut many a test design using it and tossed most of them. Little did I know that stuff would become highly collectable.

4 pieces of glass. 2 are very heavy and bright yellow. They are made from 70% lead oxide and a small amount of cerium to keep the radiation from browning them. They were used for the interior windows . The other 2 are a lighter color and have less lead oxide in them. They were used in the exterior viewing windows since the 70% lead oxide windows were very soft and scratched easily. All are laying on a dollar bill to show size. The heavy ones together re about 1/2 the bill and the other 2 would cover most of the bill.

Life hack: taking the bins out is a much more dopamine inducing activity when you also find a small cool rock in the landscaping gravel on your way back 😲🥰 #rock #lapidary #rockhounding
