40 Days Since Iāve Started Being Vegetarian

Describe one positive change you have made in your life.
The positive change? Being vegetarian. Well, for 40 days then Iām non-vegetarian again.
Why did I even embark on this journey?
Every year during Lent, I would embark on a vegetarian journey, a lacto-ovo-vegetarian journey to be exact and this year, it was from the 5th of March till the 19th of April 2025.
Thus, I went from consuming meat to consuming tofu almost everyday as well as started consuming vegetables again.
Albeit being vegetarian, I try to reduce my rice consumption. Thus, I mainly mixed rolled oats into my dishes.
I started shopping for groceries even more (which may not be such a good thing) but I was surprised at the number of items I could buy and only spend minimal.
Well, vegetables are cheap, which is good.
Changing my diet in combination with my usual routine at work and ensuring I reach my daily steps of 10,000 steps, I started losing weight.
Not much. However, Iāve been struggling with losing the weight that I have gained during my time off in the Surgical Posting.
Now that Iām non-vegetarian again, obtaining food is easier and I actually miss being vegetarian.
Perhaps soon I will embark on this journey again.

The creativity of the monks to make Lent easier for themselves is extremely impressive in an obscure way.

During Lent, weāre invited to quiet the noise and return to centerācloser to Christ. This post is a personal reflection on fasting, not just from food, but from anything that crowds out peace. In the letting go, we make space for what matters most: a deeper connection to our Savior. This season, Iām walking toward Him with gratitude for His love and sacrifice.

I started watching Twitch again after a seven-week break for Lent. Watching it the way I did before has not been good for me, so I plan to drastically limit how I watch it or be willing to stop watching altogether.

Both investigate the tiny ways in which individuals influence things for the better, and the course of history itself, which may feel immutable. Both investigate what "progress" might mean, and whether it is indeed possible to better humanity.
The first half on "Lent" is a pretty straightforward historical novel, told from Girolamo's point of view, making this controversial person endearing: he's impatient, snarky, but a honestly devout, intellectually curious person.

So. "Lent" by Jo Walton. It was recommended to my by @NilaJones (thank you!) as I was reading Ada Palmer's "Inventing the Renaissance", and it is indeed good to read these two together. They share a time (the Renaissance) and place (Florence), many characters, chief among them Girolamo Savonarola, "Lent"'s main character, but also a view of history.

The only not that straightforward part is that he can see and banish demons, and that he really has these visions. This first part is nice, beautifully written, and immersive.
And then there's an epic plot twist that changes everything and truly makes the novel great, that lets it investigate both theology and history in new ways and that highlights both the powers of nerdery and cooperation in a brilliant way.

It's not really that I want to *control* everything, I just feel like I have to *do" everything, and do it on my own, alone. And then I can't, but I have to, and I overexert myself.
I've never seen it as "pride", though, but it is: thinking oneself so very important one can't be replaced. As if.

I keep returning to Jesus calming the storm on lake Galilee, one of the miracles I have a hard time accepting, a story that's ultimately about faith, about giving up control. I need to do that. I can't do everything by myself.
Maybe it's even sinful to think I should. Maybe I need to accept I'm not actually alone in these storms. Just as the character in "Lent" has to.

"You donāt bloody have to do everything yourself. Who do you think you are, so puffed up with pride?ā Crookback says. āStop trying to control everything as if youāre king of the world."
Ouch. I'm in this picture big time and I don't like it.

"You canāt do this alone, Asbiel, and I canāt either. You have to trust me. Hell is always divided against itself. If we can do this togetherāthatās what itās impossible to say in Hell!ā āThe house divided against itself cannot stand, that means Hell cannot stand,ā Girolamo says. āLetās bring it down, brother.ā

What a powerful vision of what Hell is, and how it can maybe be broken.
