World's carbon dioxide levels hit a record high in 2024: Report
When the bulletin was first published in 2004, the annual average level of #CO2 measured by #WMO's Global Atmosphere Watch network of monitoring stations was 377.1 ppm. In 2024 it was 423.9 ppm.
About half of the total CO2 emitted each year remains in the #atmosphere and the rest is absorbed by #Earth's land #ecosystems and #oceans. However, this storage is not permanent. As global temperature rises, the oceans absorb #less CO2 because of decreased solubility at higher temperatures, while land sinks are impacted in a number of ways, including the potential for more persistent #drought.
The likely reason for the record growth between 2023 and 2024 was a large contribution from #wildfire #emissions and a reduced uptake of CO2 by land and the ocean in 2024—the warmest year on record, with a strong #ElNiño.
During El Niño years, CO2 levels tend to rise because the efficiency of land carbon sinks is reduced by drier vegetation and #forest fires—as was the case with exceptional drought and fires in the #Amazon and southern #Africa in 2024.

Как я полюбил LESS и с его помощью добавил в CSS статическую типизацию на основе венгерской нотации (часть 3)
В первой части я рассказывал об основах CSS-препроцессора LESS : переменных, миксинах, и некоторых полезных приёмах. Во второй — про автоматическую проверку файлов с картинками и генерацию CSS из них же прямо в процессе компиляции, про то, как сделать изображения адаптивными, про миксины в роли функций и про основы написания LESS-плагинов на Javascript'е (они сильно расширяют базовые возможности LESS). Cегодня же мы погрузимся в тему плагинов достаточно глубоко и добавим в CSS… ни много ни мало — статическую типизацию с валидацией! Которая, как и полагается системе статических типов, позволит отлавливать семантические ошибки ещё на уровне компиляции, а значит — писать более безопасный CSS-код с меньшим количеством сюрпризов. #TIL that in #less, if you enable case-insensitive searching, it only searches insensitively if your search string is all lower case. As soon as you include a capital letter in the search string, it goes back to searching case-sensitively regardless.
Weird how it's easy to miss things like that. I knew that happened in #emacs, but somehow, in 20 years I'd never noticed it in less.
I presume the rationale (in both tools) is that if you went to the extra effort of typing the capital letter, you meant it. I found out that less did this by _pasting_ a search string into it, which invalidates that assumption – it would have been _more_ effort for me to deliberately downcase the string I pasted.
So I guess I must have never done that before, or else, wasn't paying attention when I did!
