**A little hacking, a little deception, a slight lack of consent… that never hurt anyone, right?**

My plan was coming together all thanks to Alpha Net and their perfectly timed debut. Their walls were easy to get behind, faking an Omega profile and requesting an Alpha’s services for my nonexistent heat.

After all the preparation was complete, the time had finally come. I was matched, and they were on their way.

Maybe I wouldn’t have come this far if other Alphas hadn’t brushed me off for being a knot desiring Beta. Maybe regret wouldn’t be filling my head as I looked down at Suki. Maybe I could find a way to make her forget, to restart this meet and greet with more pizzazz and trust.

But I knew it was too late for that.

So I would take what I wanted, a perfect combination of pain and pleasure, and in the end, I would suffer whatever consequences came my way.

We've known for quite a while now that Marsha P Johnson was not even at Stonewall when the riot broke out. In an interview she did before she was killed, she described hearing about it after the fact. We don't actually know 'who threw the first brick' but some historians point to stone butch Black lesbian Stormé deLarverie as a leading possibility.

Variations on a theme emerged around the time of Roland Emmerich's awful 2015 Stonewall movie which featured a fictional white boy inciting the riot. People were quite rightly outraged by the whitewashing and a plot that yet again portrayed the anger of a cisgender white man as the motive force of history.

In response, we started seeing the claim that a drag queen or a trans woman of colour 'threw the first brick.' The problem is that Black and trans lives were so poorly memorialised that Marsha and another candidate Sylvia Rivera are the only ones popular centrist LGBT activist culture even knew about.

In the end I think the search for a 'hero of Stonewall' is misguided for two reasons.

A riot is an emergent phenomenon that occurs when a whole crowd of people simultaneously decide to act on their rage (or jubilation, e.g. football riots). Emegent phenomena have tipping points but no single point of origin. The second and subsequent bricks mattered just as much as the first; without them following in quick succession the first brick thrower would simply have been arrested (or killed).

Secondly, it wasn't even the first queer riot in the United States: that was the Compton's cafeteria riot in 1966, three years prior to Stonewall, and that one WAS unquestionably led by trans women.

The focus on Stonewall in the collective imaginary of queer activism speaks to the absolute death grip New York City has on our ideas of cosmopolitanism, no matter where we are in the Anglosphere. It's frankly weird that the UK's biggest LGBTQ charity is named after Stonewall and not some local event or person. Its NYC-ness made Stonewall seem a more real and authentic origin story for gay liberation than other candidates like Compton's, or the Mattachine Society, or Magnus Hirschfeld, or pre-WWII Berlin.
