So I am trying to boot #FreeBSD on my #LibreComputerAlta featuring an #A311D. I have tried boot only aarch64 image. The SoC supports upstream #uboot. FreeBSD bootloader comes up, some text are corrupted and USB keyboard doesn't work. Anyway it boots into the installer, tries loading kernel then it prints error that these files are not there:

/etc/hostid
/boot/entropy

I'm guessing that the bootloader is supposed to populate these files. Anyway, if you have hints, let me know. I will study about FreeBSD boot process myself after lunch.

PS: I don't want to use FreeBSD on my #SBC. I want to use the GPU and the #NPU and I'm, pretty sure FreeBSD hasn't got support for those. But I want to collect some data and make it public in the case anyone was interested.

PS2: At some point I might be interested in adding driver support to FreeBSD myself, if I could do it with #Rust. The plan would be for the next 1-2 years, God willing.

So someone in FLOSS #DeltaChat group said #ARM #SBCs are terrible at computation power. And that a #miniPC has much better computation power comparing to something like #RaspberryPi. I had plans for a #homeserver and I wanted to use my #LibreComputer #Alta and utilize its #npu.

Libre Computer boards have really good prices comparing to the performance they provide comparing to other ARM SBCs such as #RPi. However, comparing them with a mini or even #microPC, an old micro PC provides better computation power.

LibreComputer #RenegadeElite features a #Rockchip #rk3399, 4GB DDR4 and costs 76 USD:

libre.computer/products/roc-rk

On the other hand, this renewed #HP #EliteDesk is 100 USD and with far better specs:

amazon.com/HP-EliteDesk-Mini-D

Maybe it's not fair compare a renewed product with a brand new one. But it seems for having a homeserver to #selfhost things, if we factor out power usage, an old mini PC is better than a new ARM SBC.

However, if we also consider power usage, the abovementioned LibreComputer board consumes only 15 W under full load. And the old Ryzen 5 on that HP mini PC has a TDP of 35 W. This affects running cost of your homeserver and also the cost for the #UPS. But for myself, there isn't a big deal between 15W and 35W.

Edit: Comments or advises are very welcome!

Edit2: On second thought, I won't go for second hand or renewed. I want to use them as servers and this means 100% uptime. And I doubt second hand ones will survive, especially given the more power they consume which generates heat. And since my budget for a homeserver is 100 USD, ARM SBCs seem to be the only choice. I can research more though.

Powering up me #LibreComputer #LePotato with #BatoceraLinux for my cousins. Last time I did so, I remember it had some bug with storage. Checking to see if the bug is still there to report.

Mini PCs rule!

This evening it is finally arrived the GMKtec Mini Computer Intel N97 12gen Alder Lake I ordered a couple of weeks ago.

Now I look forward to install #FreeBSD on it, and to taste that joy you feel when you erase #Windows from a brand new computer... 😍

If you see at the dimensions, it is just slightly bigger than a #RPI2, while it is much more powerful than a #RPI5 and it came equipped with 12GB and 256GB SSD. Not bad! 😏

It will replace my #LibreComputer #Renegade, which has served me very well so far, but now I need more power and the ability to work on a browser without hiccups...

If everything is going to work as I wish, I am going to release a new article about my (new) #ghostpc with this tiny computer running FreeBSD.

Picture of two mini computer on a kitchen counter top. On the left: a Raspberry PI 2 on a clear case, it has rectangular shape and it is longer than the other mini pc. On the right: a GMKTeck, it has a cubic shape and it is double the height of the RPI2.

Minor upgrade. Added an 128G eMMC module to my #LePotato running #pihole on #armbian. armbian-config made it simple to transfer the installed OS from the sd-card to the emmc module. Had to fix a permission problem on one file to get pihole web ui working again. #librecomputer

Finally today my memory cards arrived so I can enjoy playing with Libre Computer Alta. And when you do SBCs, Do NOT buy a cheap ordinary memory card. Or like me you will waste time and money. Alternatively, you could even go for M.2 SSD or boot from USB 3 if your SBC supports that.

Good news @Fediverse,

#LibreWolf aka #librewolfbrowser is now providing a new #Debian repository that serves also #aarch64; I've just installed it on #Devuan 5 Daedalus and I am actually writing this very post with it from my #librecomputer "Renegade" Board!

Thanks LibreWolf Team! 🙏

@jk my favorite #RPi is probably #LibreComputer or #NanoPi. I wish there was more support for #FreeBSD

Living under 1.5GHz... :flan_hacker:

It is incredible the thing I can do and achieve with this little underpowered #arm #SBC #LibreComputer #Renegade! :flan_strong:

This wouldn't be possible without #Devuan and #WindowMaker though... :flan_heart:

However I am pretty sure that I could squeeze up more performance with some #BSD, unfortunately the #SoC is supported but not the board... :flan_sad:

Libre Computer Solitude is a single-board PC with and Amlogic S905D3 processor and a Raspberry Pi 3-style design

The Libre Computer Solitude is a Raspberry Pi lookalike that’s powered by an Amlogic S905XD3 quad-core ARM Cortex-A55 processor with Mali-G31 MP2 graphics and a 1.2 TOPS AI accelerator.
It’s available for purchase from LoverPi, which is selling a model with 4GB of LPDDR4 memory for $45. There’s also a slightly cheaper 2GB model, but it’s […]

Well, the #Ubuntu image I pulled from #LibreComputer is….not great.

I’m about to give up and just use one of my RPi’s. Pretty sure all I have are RPi2.

So #Fedora's #Amlogic support is apparently limited. Even though #LibreComputer lists Fedora 39 as tested on Le Potato, they don't go into how they got it working.

Libre Computer's documentation has always been really bad.

I think it's booting. I believe it's actually coming online. But I can't find working credentials to log in remotely, and local console doesn't work _at all_.

#Ubuntu works, though. I really don't want to use Ubuntu.

Believe me or not I can browse #internet with this #LibreComputer ROC-RK3328-CC in FullHD resolution.

I can even load heavy website like Tergat or Wellmard! Well known heavy-weight websites!

Not enough for YouDude but I don't actually watch it.

Anyway pretty impressive!

All of this thanks to 4GB or Ram, #LibreComputer custom linux image, #Devuan, #WindowsMaker and #LibreWolf powered by: #Decentraleyes #PrivacyBadger and #Ublock-origin (integrated)

I will publish it in the late evening! :flan_hacker:
