My article "Zombitron: towards a toolbox for repurposing obsolete smartphones into new interactive systems" is out !

I present a high-level approach aimed at encouraging the practice of repurposing obsolete smartphones in the design of interactive systems, despite their complexity and heterogeneity. I discuss how such a tool can be integrated into creative practices and in particular into the design of music controllers.

That kind of "undone science" could be better funded if they weren't so busy throwing #LLMs at everything.

I'm really proud. It is my first time writing a paper alone teehee ! (thank you to the reviewers for their kindness and their great feedbacks)

No spoilers but I give you the abstract as a teaser:
(so you will come see my presentation on the 26-27 (open-free-online (so no excuse) (and also in some parts of the world IRL for example in Paris thanks to @limitesnumeriques

This article explores the possibilities of reusing obsolete smartphones and tablets to build new interactive systems. Taking the case of a musical instrument, I present my research into the design of a controller made from various of these obsolete smartphones. From the diagnostic stage to the creation of a new autonomous electronic object, I document the process, the barriers and the levers encountered. Based on these explorations and discussions with two professional musicians, I provide several insights into the software and hardware aspects, with a view to continuing this work, towards the creation of an open-source toolkit enabling anyone to build new interactive systems with old devices. I discuss the implication of how a high-level web-based approach could allow designers to enter the black box and foster permacomputing using smartphones.

Notifications are out for #Limits2025 and we are excited for the program with 14 papers accepted! Looking forward to two vibrant days of talks, reverse panels, conversations, new connections, and old friends. Stay tuned for the program and registration links to be posted soon.
