A selection of Limpet feeding trails.When the tide comes in Limpets beging feeding by scraping freshly grown algae off the rocks. They use a radula (a rasp-like tongue) which has up to a hundred tiny teeth made from one of the strongest natural substances we know of.

Normally I only see iridescence/nacre on limpet shells when I flip them over and look inside. These individuals live in an exposed spot and the outside of their shells have worn down to the point where you can see the blueish sheen showing through.

A pair of Limpet shells in pic1 that have been predated on by Dog whelks (Nucella lapillus) like the one in pic2. Dog whelks are carnivorous marine snails that drill holes in the shells of other species then inject them with digestive enzymes and suck the resulting "soup" up with their proboscis. 🐌😋
