Photographie en couleur présentant dans les deux tiers inférieurs un champ de lin en fleurs., un bleu que je trouve magnifique et dans le tiers supérieur, la ligne d'horizon avec la haie bordant ce champ et derrière, le clocher, et quelques maisons d'un village, vraiment hors zone de netteté, sous un ciel, pas très clair.

Diptyque vertical sur fond noir de deux photos en proxi de fleurs de lin. Bien sûr, sur les deux photos des fleurs sont de couleur bleue mais la première photo a été prise à hauteur des fleurs de lin et par conséquent, l'arrière-plan est constitué des tiges vertes, hors zone de netteté, d'une part alors que la seconde photo a été prise plutôt de dessus avec en arrière-plan, le sol, brun foncé d'autre part.

Ancient white clothes hanging on a washing line in the Inner courtyard of our farm life museum and cultural heritage centre. Between the laundry climbs a pink rose. In the background on a brick wall is an educational sign with photos and descriptions. The clothes, a nightgown, an undershirt, and long johns, were traditionally made of linen (later cotton) and decorated with lace and white embroidery.

dear #sewing peeps, do any of y’all know how much shrinkage 100% #linen fabric has? if the instructions say 3 yds of fabric, should i buy an extra yard?

I have finished the little linen top! It's a gift to my mum and the second one after the working prototype. Meant to be a nice stand-alone garment for summer, but also something to fill out the neckline of something a bit chilly when it's colder. A little linen top! Machine sewn with hand finishing on every seam, based off an Edwardian guimpe in an old magazine.

A white sleeveless top hanging off a clothes hanger which in turn is hanging off a glass door. It has a closure in the back yoke, the front yoke is heavily decorated with little tucks, pintucks and lace. From the yoke falls a voluminous skirt section, to roughly mid hip on a person. There is a bit of diagonal insertion lace on the upper front and side, looking very intentional and not at all something to piece together a cutting mistake! Sini's hand is holding onto the hem a bit. Despite the amount of fabric gathered onto the yoke the linen falls and smooths down gracefully, and would hug the body of the wearer loosely, for it is just so soft. The fabric is sheer. Behind the door is a gray corset with black lace, just hanging out.

Detail photo of the back button placket. It's only the length of the yoke, which stops at about shoulder blade level. There are four buttons on the body and two on the collar, which is a medium to tall standing collar. There are more pintucks and more lace. The buttons themselves are a 1.5 centimetre white pearlescent plastic, with a flower motif, easier to button with arthritic fingers than a tiny button. They sit in hand sewn buttonholes. The fabric is so soft and sheer you can see through the doubled up yoke fabric as well. Sini's pink fingers hold onto the collar, a bit of quilt in the background.

Detail photo of the insertion lace, side seam, arm opening and yoke. The seam allowances have been felled down by hand, the tiny hand stitches showing through to the right side. The insertion lace is between two hemmed and machine top stitched sections, looking sharp and reasonably robust for being on the bias and lace that is mostly air with some ambitions of linen thread. The armhole has been hemmed with a truly tiny rolled hem, also by hand.

Sunset is a vibrant mix of yellow orange and pink. A cheerful mix of colors celebrating the end (or beginning) of the day.

I have finished the blouse! I managed to find a couple more buttons (there were some under my keyboard, I choose to blame the cats) and now it has all the buttons, as well as a couple of hooks and bars, slightly adjustable.
A better full view photo in above thread, currently have cat on lap so no new photo like that!

A top down photo of a white linen blouse in an Edwardian style, with tucks and lovely full ruffles. It's from an airy and lightweight linen, sheer and soft. There are 10 tiny shell buttons with four holes along a narrow button placket, in pairs of two. They are small and pearlescent. Sini's hand in lower frame, blouse looking done here but still missing a couple of things not visible in this photo.

Close up photo of the tiny hooks portion of the hooks and bars closures on the shaped waistband. They are very small and the bit that attaches to the garment has been nearly fully covered in tiny stitches of white linen thread. Two of the buttonholes are visible from the wrong side. They have been neatly sewn with the same linen thread, well contained, oval and small.

The thread bars on the other side of the waistband, two pairs. They're about 7mm apart, providing a tiny bit of adjustment for room, which doesn't look like much but will have a difference in feel. Two of the small shell buttons are also in frame, very small and lovely and shiny. Being organic they are not quite identical or symmetric, but this is fine, they're quite pretty. Sini's pink fingers are holding onto the edge being shown. The scale is quite small, the individual threads of the fabric weave can be easily made out, the fabric is fine but not incredibly densely woven!

I have put on the sleeves! Finished the inside seam with just the overlock stitch on my normal sewing machine, as I'm going to do the buttonholes and buttons by hand, and only have so much elbow. Looks like a blouse, now. The circa 1905 sleeves are so nice. I tried it on and it felt like wearing a cloud, also!

A top down view of a mostly finished looking white linen blouse on the convenient surface of a metal wire rack for clothes. The sleeves have been folded a bit to fit them into frame, like the shirt is clutching at its pearls. The nearly insubstantial, thin fabric flows down from the shoulder in puffy sleeves that narrow down to a simple cuff, there's three decorative tucks running down the front, and a rather fancy and full ruffle both sides of the button placket. A narrow standing collar and a shaped waistband with a sort of dovetail notch at the front complete the style, which looks fairly historical but also just on the edge of something you recognise as modern, being Edwardian. An air purifier cylinder, some quilts and warm toned parquet in the background.

"Finnish-ing School" teableau for 04/30/25

The little vintage plate was made by Arabia Finland, depicting a traditional costume of Häme, Finland. There is a series of five of these dishes showing different areas of the country but I only have this one.

Tea tableau in the style of folk art, with traditional Northern European patterns on china, embroidered linens, and a decorative miniature plate of a Finnish woman in the costume of Hame, Finland. The tea selection is missing because I forgot to include it.

It is... Such a nice linen, though. Almost useless, but so pretty! Modern linen very rarely is as fine as it historically was, and while this also isn't it's at least the correct weight and drape. It's so soft and has a slight sheen!

A photo showing how sheer and light the linen fabric is. White and shimmery, it shows through the details of Sini's hand behind it. There is variation in the thread weight and thickness, but at a glance and without focusing on it overmuch it looks incredibly nice and finely made. This is almost peak linen, these days. Sini's myriad silver rings glitter prettily, also.

More fabric, manipulated in such a way that the raking sideways light plays across the surface of it. It is very very smooth and has a slight shimmer and shine to it, like a bit of snow with sunlight hitting it. Quite lovely. It would feel light, weightless, soft and smooth to the skin, though with fingertips you could feel the slight texture of the latticework of the woven fibres.

Some of yesterday's sewing! I have accomplished... Most of two sleeves. Turned a little hem on the cuff slits, added a tiny little reinforcement square on them because this linen is so fine. So fine. Probably won't last incredibly long in use, but then again it won't be a super practical shirt so won't be worn quite as much... The pattern is the one I drafted according to the 1905 manual, again.

A very close up photo of the very tiny little hem hand sewn onto the slit on what is to become a blouse sleeve. The turn is some millimetres wide, and there is a tiny little square of folded up fabric hand sewn onto the slit end, where there will be some strain. The square has been flipped on the diagonal, and one corner has been folded over from the right side to the back. The fabric is a very delicate linen with some thread variation, sheer enough to see the shadow and colour of Sini's pink fingertips through it, as she is holding up the tiny detail for the camera.

Two slightly strange shaped sleeves, of the same fine white linen, laid out on a beige wood grain desk. The sleeve seam is not at the very centre of the scoop that attaches to the armpit, but a bit to the front. This means that in a very soft and fine fabric the rigidity and added tension of the sleeve seam will not drag at the curve of arm and elbow, but naturally fall below the arm. The little sleeve slits are hanging open, not being attached to cuffs yet, with their little reinforcement squares. The sleeve seam has been done in a narrow flat felled hem, slightly wobbly.
