Closeup of the white papery bark of a tree branch, which has what look like strings of dark brown beads traced across it in patterns that look like veins, or perhaps intermingling streams. There's a large glob of rich green moss growing on the bark on the right hand side.

Finland celebrated #vappu today, but I was more excited about finding these flowers, liverworts, at last. I have not seen them in these parts of Helsinki before.

Re-evolution of dioicy in the genus Riccia may have occurred with probable de novo establishment of a new sex chromosome from the autosome, and the m-chromosomes have evolved independently from chromosomes in the Marchantiales.

Several long, flat ribbons of green tissue cascade down a rock, with a single vein-like structure in the middle. They fork neat their ends, and are fringed with tiny white hairs. They are extremely small; grains in the rock are visible next to them.

Does anyone knowledgeable know if this plant is a lichen or a liverwort? I was struck by the different plant types on the rock walls of a disused railway cutting in Rothbury. One side is mostly moss and the other this plant, and it varies along the length too.
