Thurston’s Lobster Pound or simply just “The Dock.” Maine’s wharfs are built out above the water on pilings so that fishermen can access them at both high and low tide. Even at low tide a 50-ft boat can pull directly up next to the wharf. This part of Maine has tides that typically fluctuate by 10-12 ft.

A film photo of a wharf on a Maine harbor. It is low tide and the wharf’s pilings are exposed maybe 10 ft. There are stacks of yellow and blue lobster traps and a float connected to the wharf by a ramp with a lobster boat tied up to it. It is sunny and the water is very blue. The space below the wharf is in shadow.

Looking up Bass Harbor towards the mountains of Acadia on a beautiful May evening.

I climbed up a 15ft-tall stack of lobster traps to get this photo 😂 Traps are stored on the dock through the winter months and when climbed carefully they make a great vantage point to view the harbor 😅 #DontTryThisAtHome #LobsteringLife

Thurston’s Wharf. One of Maine’s many historical working waterfront locations still used by lobstermen today. The wharf buys lobsters from many of the boats that fish out of the harbor and provides bait, fuel, and storage space for lobster traps and other gear.

A film photo of a wharf used by lobstermen in Maine. In the foreground and left side of the frame you can see the wharf structure which is comprised of piling holding up a wooden platform upon which there are buildings and open spaces used by fishermen to store traps. Further in the background there is a float with a ramp to it with a boat tied up. Beyond that there is a second wharf, and finally the mountains of Acadia National Park are visible. The water is glossy calm and the film’s blue hues are very slightly towards turquoise.

Bass Harbor reflected in the wharf window. I spent the first three years of my lobster-fishing career on the white-hulled boat on the closest mooring.

I’m making #WorkingWaterfrontWednesday a thing lol.

A film photo of a window on a wooden-shingled building on a wharf. The reflection in the window is the primary subject of the photo. A harbor scene is reflected with three or four boats on moorings visible and an old sardine cannery building in the background.

I’m back on the internet after being away from home for a week and taking a break from it.

I took this photo from one of the handful of lobstermen’s workshops at the commercial wharf that buys lobsters from the boat I work on. These shops are predominantly used for sanding and re-painting lobster buoys each year and storing gear and spare boat parts.

Lobster pound, Swans Island Maine.
While “lobster pound” is colloquially used along the coast of Maine to refer to a casual seafood restaurant—often located by the ocean—where you can eat lobster. In the case of these photographs, the term can also mean a built enclosure in a cove or harbor to hold a large amount of lobster.
