Let’s Rethink Parliament: UK Political Churn

When roles turn over faster than problems can be understood, planning gets harder — not because people are worse, but because time is thinner.

The data makes this visible.

RE: mastodon.social/@DrALJONES/116

Here is a very disturbing article on . It made me realize my main problem with the argument - adding to the monstrosity of the idea itself.

„Longtermism is […], which asserts that there could be so many digital people living in vast computer simulations millions or billions of years in the future that one of our most important moral obligations today is to take actions that ensure as many of these digital people come into existence as possible.“

More Everything Forever: AI Overlords, Space Empires, and Silicon Valley's Crusade to Control the Fate of Humanity | Adam Becker (interview)

Silicon Valley billionaires, such as Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and Sam Altman, promise salvation through space colonization, immortality, superintelligent AI, and endless growth. Adam Becker, astrophysicist and author of More Everything Forever: AI Overlords, Space Empires, and Silicon Valley’s Crusade to Control the Fate of Humanity, debunks these profoundly immoral and biophysically impossible delusions, and explains why resisting them through collective action is essential. Highlights include:

  • How tech billionaires confuse science fiction for reality and why their fantasies of space colonization are biophysically impossible;
  • Why Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) remains an ill-defined concept that is based in the false assumption that humans’ evolved brains work like computing machines;
  • Why large language models (LLMs), the dominant form of AI, are neither creative nor accurate enough to achieve the dreamed-for leap in machine intelligence;
  • What the end of Moore’s Law tells us about diminishing returns to technological complexity and the expectation of endless technological growth;
  • Why longtermism is a dangerous ideology of technological salvation and endless growth, prioritizing hypothetical future populations while excusing present-day social injustice and ecological destruction;
  • How the fear of death underlies techno-utopian off-planet and transhumanist fantasies;
  • Why resisting their oligarchic visions requires calling out the ridiculousness of their ideas and organizing collectively to push back both politically and economically.

I was in a discussion a few days ago about #tescreal, when this image from a #longtermism essay was posted. Somehow, it was being used as an argument for environmental despoliation and whatever billionaires, oligarchs and techbros wanna do because(missing middle), and the rights of these future masses to exist outweighs the rights of anybody in the present. Of course, these are people who don’t exist and thus don’t have a voice to override the Peter Thiels of today. Also… that missing middle.

Infographic comparing the number of humans in the past (red), present (green), and next 800,000 years (yellow), in a scenario where humanity's population stabilizes at 11 billion with a life expectancy of 88 years. Used to show that the rights of nonexistent future people(and thus, somehow, the privilege of the currently dominant to pollute the environment and use those people as they see fit)outweigh any rights of present people.

I don't agree with all of this -- I **generally** don't usually fully agree with @taylorlorenz -- but this is a good high-level summary. Worth watching. (Or listening to, the visuals aren't central!)

For this week’s #ThursdayBooksandBeer I’m continuing with the take downs of the weird world of tech and AI with Adam Becker’s More Everything Forever. This is essential and sobering reading that covers the (supposed) Singularity, Effective Altruism, Longtermism and Techno Optimism, all of which are basically deluded and try to distract us from the very real problems that exist in the world by pointing towards a shiny new capitalist future in space that AI will bring us. My apt accompaniment is an Iterative Logic IPA from Inner North Brewing. “The dream is always the same: go to space and live forever.” #reading #literature #ai #ea #longtermism #craftbeer

The headline is as weird as nominating Trump for the Nobel Peace Price.
Why not start with #science around one of the countless topics where #Musk and the Society poaches. For example the physical reality on mars. royalsociety.org/news/2024/10/ But how far is the Royal S. away from Musks rediculous global strategy? Is there even a need of resettlement of humankind in a few 10 or 100 years from a planet with a geophysical expiry date of 100.000.000 years?

#transhumanism #longtermism

If you stand too close to it, you can't see the industrial policy plan for all the .. , ‘anchor projects’, .. , ‘real-world laboratories’ and ‘communication standards’. Even a global perspective is too narrow to provide an overview of the corporations' digitalisation plans.

To do so, we would also have to consider the perspective taken by its agents, who openly promote their plans. The perspectives of the heads of the largest robot car manufacturer and the largest delivery service, Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos, are
not global, but cosmic. When Musk sends a car into space, it is not a joke, but a symbol. When Branson, Bezos and Musk compete to shoot space tourists into weightlessness, it is not a sport, but a new business model.

Bezos and Musk are promoting their leap into space with the mission of overcoming humanity's attachment to Earth. Unfortunately, apart from their geometric perspective, .. they do not provide any temporal context: beyond the solar system, there will be no leaps in space travel in the foreseeable future. In our lifetime .. , the maximum for manned space missions will remain the Moon and Mars for an elite minority. However, in order to prepare for interstellar space travel, .. humanity would have over 100,000,000 years if it did not destroy the foundations of life on Spaceship Earth within 100 years and turn Earth's orbit into the world's most dangerous scrap yard within 10 years.

Longtermism ideas are constantly being laundered by reputable science youtubers.

On their own those ideas would rightfully freak any of us, that's why the constant pandering and watering down in new formats, easily digestible for mainstream audiences.

Longtermism is the closest thing to a modern day satanic cult. Many countries around the world ban dangerous cults. It's time to start raiding the tescrealist compounds.

"In evangelizing for their view, longtermist luminaries have propagated numerous lies about their ideology and/or community. For example, folks like MacAskill intentionally deceived people (see this article of mine for details) by perpetuating the falsehood that Sam Bankman-Fried — perhaps the most famous longtermist in the world — lived a modest life, when in fact he flew on private jets, lived in a “$35 million crypto frat house,” and owned some $300 million in Bahamian real estate. Pfff.

Because many longtermists, including MacAskill, are basically utilitarians, they don’t believe there’s anything intrinsically wrong with acts like lying — or fraud. If the outcome of spreading lies is overall good, then it would be morally wrong to not lie. Hence, do not trust anything that longtermists tell you about their worldview or community, as moral integrity is not — with history as our witness — something they care much about.

Here are three other insidious lies they’ve spread about their worldview. To my knowledge, this is the first time that anyone has called out such falsehoods:"

Hipster Eugenics: More genetically 'superior' kids

While the Nazis aggressively enforced a system of blonde haired and blue-eyed people, many parents today desire gene-edited babies with blond hair, blue eyes and a selection of genetically 'superior' traits.

@HG
"Preserve the light of consciousness" is just #Longtermism, a confused and repugnant 'ethical theory' turned into a pseudo-religion.

#TESCREAL nonsense where individual people have no intrinsic value but are just (contingent) vehicles for conscious states like pleasure and pain.
