Here is a very disturbing article on #longtermism. It made me realize my main problem with the argument - adding to the monstrosity of the idea itself.

I was in a discussion a few days ago about #tescreal, when this image from a #longtermism essay was posted. Somehow, it was being used as an argument for environmental despoliation and whatever billionaires, oligarchs and techbros wanna do because(missing middle), and the rights of these future masses to exist outweighs the rights of anybody in the present. Of course, these are people who don’t exist and thus don’t have a voice to override the Peter Thiels of today. Also… that missing middle.

Used to show that the rights of nonexistent future people(and thus, somehow, the privilege of the currently dominant to pollute the environment and use those people as they see fit)outweigh any rights of present people.

I don't agree with all of this -- I **generally** don't usually fully agree with @taylorlorenz -- but this is a good high-level summary. Worth watching. (Or listening to, the visuals aren't central!)

Why not start with #science around one of the countless topics where #Musk and the Society poaches. not global, but cosmic. When Musk sends a car into space, it is not a joke, but a symbol. When Branson, Bezos and Musk compete to shoot space tourists into weightlessness, it is not a sport, but a new business model.

Bezos and Musk are promoting their leap into space with the mission of overcoming humanity's attachment to Earth. Unfortunately, apart from their geometric perspective, .. they do not provide any temporal context: beyond the solar system, there will be no leaps in space travel in the foreseeable future. In our lifetime .. , the maximum for manned space missions will remain the Moon and Mars for an elite minority. However, in order to prepare for interstellar space travel, .. humanity would have over 100,000,000 years if it did not destroy the foundations of life on Spaceship Earth within 100 years and turn Earth's orbit into the world's most dangerous scrap yard within 10 years.
